marccus Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Evening all, I am running a pinto fitted with Lumenition Optronic and i am in need of a replacement ignition coil but there are no markings or numbers on the coil, so iwas wondering if anyone has a part no of a coil they have fitted or could recommend what type needs to be fitted. Thanks Quote
ray5wood Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 I have a bog standard coil on mine gives me no probs and revs to silly speeds Quote
Welly Jen Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Lumenition do coils and ballast resistors that will work with their optronic system. They are not outrageously expensive. I had some problems with my Lumenition based ignition system earlier in the year. Turned out the root cause was the wiring and hidden ignition cutout switch a previous owner had added that couldn't take the current, resulting in voltage drop. When the engine was starting the voltage dropped so low the Luminition box stopped working. While I was working all this out I found out a lot about Lumenition systems. You can download an optronic manual from the manufacturers web site http://www.newtronic.co.uk/new/main.php/lumfitv PMA50 installation instructions. It says that the coil, or coil + ballast resistor combination should be greater than 3 ohms and the coil primary side resistance should be greater than an ohm. The coil that was fitted to mine was a low voltage coil, of just over an ohm, but there was no ballast resistor. I replaced it with a Luminition coil and ballast resistor, plus a relay to bypass the ballast resistor when the starter motor is energised. This gives a couple of extra volts when the battery is being dragged down by the starter motor. A low voltage coil apparently won't last long if run continuously without a ballast resistor. Liam Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 I use one of these http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/pict/390008026454_1.jpg Quote
Liam Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Ah, that didn't work too well. It's a Lucas Gold Sports coil. No problems Quote
