I was looking at trying a few sprints in 2009 in the speed series road going novice class.  Budget is of course a consideration as I already know I have to change my catch tank and get a set of different tyres.  What would be recommended as the minimum amount of protective clothing I will need.  I know I will need helmet and overalls, what about gloves, boots, balaclava, undies, etc - how much is mandatory.

I won't be doing races.

For 2009 you will need Helmet (suggest you get one to FIA 8860-2004 or SNELL SA 2005 or BS6658 Type A/FR. The non FR BS helmets are being withdrawn in 2009 and there is a possibility that SNELL SA 2000 may be withdrawn 1/1/2010)

Also Overalls to FIA 8856-2000, if you get FIA 1986 these are being withdrawn 1/1/2010.

One of the other recent regs talks about having to wear gloves, but is not compulsory yet! It is good sense and personally I always go by the "if you've got it wear it" motto.

If you are buying new always get the latest spec you can, in 05 I bought a new helmet, which is to the SNELL 2000 spec, so will have to replace it in 2010 :arse:

There have been a lot of changes this year and I am busy compliling a new list, but taking a bit of time and some of the wording is difficult to be certain what is meant. When done I will post, hopefully couples of weeks max.

Nick am I correct in saying the current reg changes re all helmet standards is still a proposal and is proposed for the end of 2009 i.e. BS6658 Type A will be ok for next year and will need replacing for the 2010 season.

If it is still only a proposal I'm sure it will go through, safety issues usually do but anyone buying needs to know the proposals, there will be some shops out there who if asked "is this helmet suitable for competition" will be happy to say yes right up till the end of next year IYKWIM

I was trying to find out about arm restraints, haven't been able to find anyone who sells them or any pictures of how they are worn, can anyone help.

I tried googling arm restraints at work, but it wasn't too good a move! :)

Hi Andy,

Nope it was in the Spring 08 Motorsports Now magazine in Red, which means "Ratified final" and therefore will be implemented on1/1/2010 so you should be OK for next year.

However the withdrawal of SNELL SA2000 is still a "may", so personally hoping that one lasts a bit longer as my helmet has been painted to my colours. And was brand new Jan 06.

Your right about the shops :arse:

Russ, I bought a pair, but actually never used them, when you see cars rolling and arms being flung out they look a really good idea. As Mark says they are not required in the regs, but neither are boots, gloves, Fireproof underwear (particulalry hood) and Hans device, but I personally use all of these. Gives me the confidence to push a bit harder :D:D:D

So got a pair of arm restraints at discount if you want :D PM me.
