Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Hi all ...Cleggs gonna get wet, I am going to pick up my Westy that I have just put a deposit down on, only thing is it has no sidescreens or wet weather gear... Anybody got any ideas (I got about 120 miles to do) The plan at the moment is to borrow a helmet, then get wrapped up as best I can. Cant really afford to rent a trailer .... Anybody think it is unfeasable to drive that sort of mileage in this weather without any weather gear? Have visions of freezing to death Quote
brindle Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 That is really going to hurt. I picked up my car from a similar distance at the end of August and drove it back at 10pm at night. took me 3 hours (all A roads). I was deaf and frozen by the time i got home. Lots of waterproofs, helmet, maybe with ear plugs, good gloves and make sure you wear either a snood or balaclava to keep your neck warm and dry Otherwise should be a hoot - so long as you give the pedal on the right plenty of respect until you get used to is - especially if its wet. westy666 Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 weather gear is light shower protection more than anything so I doubt you'd notice the difference in the hard stuff. Ringing in the ears is all part of the experience Wouldnt recommend driving in this kind of weather and at night though Have you got 'any car' breakdown cover? Quote
Bean Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Drive naked, just like being in the bath Seriously though, woolly hat (helmet ideally) and waterproofs, earplugs if you're worried about the noise. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted November 10, 2008 Author Posted November 10, 2008 OK gotta go borrow a helmet then ... just hope it dont rain, reallty dont wanna get my pride and joy full of salty water... Car breakdown cover comes with insurance ... really hope I dont need it ... it's a nearly new duratec so hopefully will be reliable Quote
bultacobarry Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 If you don't have a Helmet, a woolly hat and a pair of ski/Motocross goggles do the job as well. If you don't have a tonneau, you could make one up using thick plastic sheet and duct tape. Same goes for a half door on the drivers side. Its not really necessary, but just if you want to keep your seats/carpet dryish I drove mine from London to N.Ireland in January with sleet/snow the whole way on stupid 16" wheels the cold was not a problem, a car is allways warmer than a bike even without a heater enjoy it. I joined the AA and made sure I had roadside recovery before I took off though. Quote
Rory's Dad Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 I drove mine back down the A1 about 40 miles in the dark and the pouring rain back in the day when it only had a aerolip. Really appreciated not having the plastic cover over the footwell - had nice warm air blowing up my trousers Rory's Dad Quote
TMD-ZETEC Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 That makes me too! (getting wet) I am pickling my Westfield up after it has been at Westfield for 3 mths having a load of stuff done to it. Forecast is rain but I still can't wait. Haven't driven it since. Quote

samcooke Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 QUOTE I am pickling my Westfield up Careful, the vinegar will play havoc with the electrics. Quote
AlfaWestie Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Hope the weather's better for your 120 mile trip back than it was for mine! Good gloves really help to stop your fingers turning blue - i threw some ski gloves in my bag at the last minute thinking i was being a wuss... Quote
Xtreme Kermit Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Got to add another 'do be careful with the use of the right foot' here. Had myself a moment at the weekend on just a damp road. My own fault of course and at low speed, but after a summer full of hooning without finding the limit, it was a real wakeup call. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted November 11, 2008 Author Posted November 11, 2008 I really just wanna get the thing home safe n sound really, I guess I will pop the pedal down to the metal a few times ... In the back of me car I have: . A padded one piece waterproof overall . Some knitted gloves and some gel mits . Some sensible small shoes so my size 12's can fit in . A scarf . A helmet . Some tools . A torch Talk about over prepped...lol Quote
