Raymond Y Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Hi, I am currently building a track only megablade and would really like to make my own wiring loom. I have been studying the wiring diagrams on Westfield World and have found several local sources for plugs and thin wall automotive wire etc. The one thing that I am missing is knowing how much wire of each colour and current rating I am likely to require. Has anyone every worked it out or recorded what they have used in making a harness? Any pearls of wisdom much appreciated. Raymond Quote
SparkyB Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I've toyed around with the idea of building my own loom, but since I changed job I've lost access to harness design software Give me an idea of how stripped down the vehicle is going to be for track use and I can probably come up with some estimates. Chasmon Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 I made up the engine loom for my car which is a fair few steps away from making a complete car loom but you need to follow the same principles. Get an idea for the gauges required for different currents and then select them accordingly and measure the car out to get the dimensions and add a bit and be generous. I actually got everything roughly in place and working (or continuity checked) then wrapped it in situ and attached it at the same time... This way everything fits. In terms of lengths though I'd say spend a fair few hours and work them out individually and buy colour coded wires you've purposely decided upon as it will help so much in the long run. I made a spreadsheet when I did my engine one, and bought everything from www.polevolt.com . you might also find http://www.dataspares.com useful for the bike plugs... TBH though when WF already make a car and engine loom for the blade - I wouldn't bother HTH Quote
Raymond Y Posted November 16, 2008 Author Posted November 16, 2008 Thanks guys. The Polevolt cataloge is great. How minimal to make the harness is one of my issues. Part of me say absolute minimum necessities with no lights at all and part of me says necessities plus indicators and brake lights would be a good idea. I just cannot quite make up my mind. If I go necessities plus brake lights and indicators what would your thoughts be? Raymond Quote

Lights for when its raining, indicators to let other cars know you're letting them through on track days etc. No idea about brake lights but in reality you may want to drive the car on the road one day or even sell it...
