custardtart Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Mark Hales has produced a DVD driving guide to various circuits, one is Oulton Park. He drives a Caterham R400 and a Boxster S around the circuit with in cam video of both. It's interesting to note that the Porsche is actually ahead of the Caterham from the start finish line down to Island then the Caterham pulls aways under heavy braking and through the the 2 chicanes before holding a 2 sec lead at the end of the lap. What's interesting is how hard Hales was working in the R400 and how easy it looked in the Porsche. It's actually quite impressive that the Porsche could stay within 2 secs of the R400, they really aren't slow. If you can get past other people making unpleasant assumptions about you then they are brialliantly built and engineered cars that can be reliable and cheap to run on. Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Got to say The boxster are a great car. My ex has had 2 and I've driven both for proper drives not just a run up the road. They are a very accomplished and if I was going back to normal production sports cars I'd defo look at one, they're bullit proof, can be used as an every day car and they're cheapish to run (via independent garage). However, there lies the problem its an every day car, a production sports car and blends in with the rest of the euro boxes once you've got over the Porsche effect its just another car. I think you'd be better getting the seat sorted with the VX as suggested earlier and get a stage 3 done on it (try seat 1st!) OK the VX is a production car but has the individuality, go kart feel and pace of a sorted kit car But your biggest problem you'll come a cross with the boxster is the 'oh right' syndrome you know when people say what car do you drive?? Porsche you reply... Oh wow top car those 911's. Its a boxster you say... not a 911 then??.... its a poor mans Porsche bet you wish you could afford a real Porsche, are you a hair dressing then? no I'm a nurse so you're gay then? and so on and so on and so the circus continues Buzz Quote

pdavies71 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Scott, Ignore the baiters - especially the TVR owners! The Boxster is a fantastic car. Mine has been completely reliable over 79,000 miles, it is comfortable, practical(enough) and not too expensive to run. (28mpg and only routine servicing) It is quick enough for most on road situations too. Feel free to drop me any questions. By the way my car is up for sale at the moment (forced by family additions) Cheers Phil Quote
tonyl42 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I've had my Boxster S from new (7 years). It is surprisingly inexpensive to run, makes a great sound at 4000rpm, and performance is more than adequate. Steering and handling are amongst the very best on the road. It has never let me down, and I would only change it for the latest facelift model, preferably with the rumoured DSG double clutch gearbox. I have yet to meet any owner who doesn't rate the Boxster as the finest of its kind. Having worked in the motor industry all my life, - not for Porsche - I have driven most of the competition. Nothing comes close for overall driver satisfaction. End of eulogy... Tony L. Quote

The Boxster is the slippery slop back to eurobox normality. Former boxster owners normally dribble into Megane or focus cabriolets and before they know it they're in a Dutton with a cross flow!! At the end of the day Scott its your wedge and I know you won't be swayed by us even the boxster owners selling their cars and blowing its trumpet. It is a very good car but very bland Ohhh for the days of the boghouse blue , with a hooligan at the wheel living on the edge!
