No Engine Number

Hi,

I wonder if anyone out there can help me.

I have purchased a new Ford Zetec 2.0L engine for my build. It is what I believe they call a 'crate' engine intended as a replacement for a ford focus engine.

My problem is there is no engine number on it. the place where you'd expect to find it is bare. My questions are:

1. I believe it's no problem for SVA (or is it) but do I need an engine number for the DVLA to register it?

2. How are engine numbers allocated. Do I need to contact ford or someone else, or make one up. If so how?

3. Is there a required method of marking the number on the engine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Are you sure it has no engine number?

On the production automotive blocks lines I have seen the first op is generally to etch part/batch/engine nos into it. Every engine has to have a number, it is a requirement of law.

hi, thanks for the response.

I believe the engine number should be on a small flat machined vertical strip about 3 inches long on the passenger side of the engine situated just above the starter motor bell.

This is just a flat blank face. Do you think the number on a Zetec is else where? I haven't seen any other numbers that look like engine numbers anywhere?

Despite what it says under my name, my knowledge of the zetec engine number location is not great, but it sounds about right in terms of location.

Where did you buy the engine from?

Martin,

I bought the engine new from GTS Tuning along with raceline sump and water rail. Have a look at their website www.GTStuning.co.uk

I have bought and SVA'd/registered 2 engines direct from the factory (Ford) one a Zetec and most recently a Duratec.

You can make up your own number as long as its stamped/engraved on the block in the relavent place it will be fine.

I have used a 4 digit number with some relavent letters

Intersting, there must be different rules for replacement engines then.

Thanks for the infor Dwilks,

What do you mean by 'relevant letters'? if for example I used my initials and my debit card pin number say, would that be acceptable to DVLA. (I wouldn't tell them it's my pin no of course!)

I noticed on the Burton website they had a chart of 2 character date codes for ford engines. Unfortunately it didn't go up to 2007/2008. Anyone happen to know these?

The engine number can be anything you like. There are plenty of Vx and Zetec replacement engines around that were supplied without engine numbers. The rationale being that if you scrap an engine you can switch the number to the new one. Once it has a number, tell the DVLC what it is so that if it ever gets stolen, if it turns up the rightful owner can be traced ;)

they were just relevant to me.

Thanks to all who posted advice.

I shall make up a suitable set of letters and numbers and stamp on to my engine.

Sorry, I 've come to this a bit late.

The guidance that I got from Ford on this when discussing the crated engine that I put in my Westy was that they normally make the last six digits the same as the chassis number and prepend the letters for the year code.

You will find the same thing when you buy an engine from a reconditioners without giving them the old one in exchange.  The idea is that you can put the last six, or even the full engine number on the block/head.

My car was SVA'd and then registered (as new with a '55 plate) with an unnumbered engine, and IIRC the V5 still has no engine number on it.

Morbius,

Thanks for the advice. I have since been told that the date code for 2007 is '7S'. So I intend to use this followed by some suitable numbers. I like the idea of taking the last 6 digits from the chassis number.

As an slight aside I had my engine mapped & tuned on a rolling road yesterday at Mech Motorsport in Cheltenham . It's the Ford Focus replacement Zetec 2.0L crate engine running the standard single ford throttle body on the plastic inlet manifold.

It developed 152bhp at 5775rpm and the tuner had it up to 121mph on the rollers! (I nearly c**p**d myself at the noise and waiting for something to break, but nothing did). :D an exhiliarating and somewhat frightening day.

So just the final SVA covers now to fit the off we go for a test.

remember dont try doing the speed test on the road  :sheep:

although it wont be doing 121 ont' road without a 121mph tail wind  :t-up:
