John Williams (Panda) - Joint Manchester AO Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Which alternator is this as the sticker has rubbed off... i though it might be cheaper if i sourced my own than go through the factory. engine zetect 1.8 silvertop Quote
Kevin Wood Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 That looks like the normal westfield Zetec alternator. I have the Ford part number at home and I believe it's in the zetec build manual however I had some issues sourcing this when I did my build. It's much smaller than the normal Zetec alternator fitted to the Mondeo / Escort / Orion. IIRC, it turned out to be from the Fiesta 1.8i 16v which had the Zetec E (not SE) engine. Kevin Quote
John Williams (Panda) - Joint Manchester AO Posted September 1, 2008 Author Posted September 1, 2008 thanks... good news sounds like it under warranty!!!! can i just take it from engine, need to mark the positions of the pulleys? cheers john Quote
pistonbroke Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 No need mate just take it off , but remeber how it all goes back again Quote
Kevin Wood Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Yep, be sure to disconnect the battery in case you short the unswitched 12v connection on the back! Just slacken the two bolts that connect the alternator to the mounting bracket on the engine, loosen the bolt that holds the tensioner strip to the bracket on the engine, then undo the locking bolt where the tensioner meets the alternator, swing the alternator towards the engine and ease the belt off the pullies. Remove the remainder of the fasteners and the 2 electrical connections from the terminals on the back, noting that the thin wire goes to the small terminal and the 2 thick brown wires go to the big terminal. Can't recall if that leaves a terminal spare on the alternator but make a note of how it's wired just in case.. Kevin Quote
John Williams (Panda) - Joint Manchester AO Posted September 11, 2008 Author Posted September 11, 2008 after parcelforcing 24hour service to westfield... i was told when i chased them up yesterday that was with the manufacturers..... If i had know it as going to take this long i would have bought a new one.! still don't know if this is causing the REV counter issue... MW @ WF says it might! p!$$ed off again. john Quote
Kevin Wood Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 My experience with the VDO rev counter is that it does tend to go nuts if the supply voltage is low, so could well be related. Kevin Quote
John Williams (Panda) - Joint Manchester AO Posted September 14, 2008 Author Posted September 14, 2008 thanks kevin... reading the current threads alternators seem to be going down like flie at the moment. many thanks John Quote
