Guest Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 The Caged boys just needed the interior side panels removing to fit it. The screen was left in place, as was all the bodywork. Taking the cage off would mean taking the interior panels out to get to the mounts under the "door" and under the screen. All other mounts are accessible regardless. You could always cut inspection holes in the panels so you wouldn't need to remove them. Me, I'd leave the cage on all the time... I can't belive you missed a trick here !!!! mines got capative nuts welded onto the chassis so you can just unbolt and remove the whole thing as we swapped to bonded carbon panels inside . when i say mine i mean the car that pete now owns* *it will always be mine ...... actually if he sells it i'll no doubt try and buy it back. You're right... But then I wouldn't ever want to take the cage off. If it *needed* to come off I suspect I'd be in a lot of trouble already Quote

If it *needed* to come off I suspect I'd be in a lot of trouble already you'd be surprised how much easier alot of jobs inside the car were with the cage off , and to be fair with captive nuts it wasn't a hard job either ...... worst bit was always rear chassis supports. Blatman Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I'll put it on the list of "things I'd like to do if..." Quote
dhutch Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 Yeah, i have to admit im not a fan of the amount of side impact protection on the mk cage. Great for geting in and out off... - Im fairly sure ive seen one with side bars, so that would help? maybe ask them if its possably to have the tops bars further out? As for weight, i guess if it thinner wall tube than the westy cages it could be as light and as strong depending on the grade of steel. - What the wall thickness on a caged westy cage? Overall weight? I feel like another all to mk. Otherwise roll on RAC hoop! Daniel Quote
Guest Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 as for getting in and out of cages ...... fastest it always straight out the top , and in as most 7 type cars you'll want to stand in the seat before dropping your legs into the tunnel. 15kg's rings a bell on the westy cage weight overall. Quote
tex Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 after rolling the dax over and coming within millimeters of being decapitated along with my wife on our honeymoon i now cant see why anything alse would suffice.. hitting anything above a dog in size and it hits the screen - your dead.. so even a full cage isnt sufficient.. but a cage with a smaller bar as low as can go without impeding vision is absolutely a must.. i was doing 50mph when what felt like a mortar round hit the car in reality a deer jammed under the suspension causing it to flip right over twice without contacting the ground then landing on the wheels - for a grand or less i know what is good value - my head on the deck or not.. MAT1800 Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 How much taller is the rear section of the Westfield / Caged full cage compared to the WF RAC bar ? Quote

Yeah. Well that one of the things im debating with myself. - Obvously there are few that would argue other than its safe with a cage, and the westy cages proberbly offer more protection than the mk? But where do you draw the line between safty and usability. - For racing i think pretty much everyone would say go for a full cage. But many that do track days only have a roll bar/hoop, often not even a braced one. Ditto for roads. -Are roads actaully safer than the track? Unspecting bend, wet, slid, teligraph pole... -Is the mk cage better than nothing and a good compromise? -Does an unbraced roll bar actually provide anthing more than a seatbelt mounting point? -Is a side impact bar actually more important on such a low and inherently stable car? All be it light, and more than possable to roll it. Im trying to get a car bought soon because ive been looking and learning for far to long without putting it into practice. But maybe i need a sit in a caged car! Daniel Quote
