jak Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 My Son as had insurance on is own car (1.0 Micra) for the last 6 months on his provisional driving license, cost £890 TPF&T. He passed his test 1st time today. Phoned his insurance company to tell them he now as full license, instead of being told well done, he is told they want an additional £568 to take him to renewal. . He is doing his pass plus for which he'll get a 10% discount on the remaining premium, approx £100. Sorry for the rant, but it's really p****d me off!!!! There's no wonder there are so many uninsured drivers around John Quote
zoso Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 It sucks, but let's face it, driving at that age is a hell of a privilage... So it comes with a big price, crash tax, to go with car tax, speed tax etc etc.... Also reflects the reality of young(er - i'm only 24!) drivers. They are a big risk... Problem is public transport is so crap these days it's a nessescity to drive in alot of places. Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 I will never understand insurance companies as long as I live. We insured the Mazda with Elephant renewal came through thought thats a bit dear £400 so went on go-compare got it insred £140 cheaper with Bell who are owned buy Admiral who also own Elephant Did an on-line quote with Elephant on a TVR Tamora at the weekend put my details, all clean and 36 with 5 years ncd came in at £560 added Louise as a named driver she's 31 also clean and just putting her on brought it down to £440 no where's the logic in that. Save's money to add her even though she will probably never drive it Quote

I can understand either how the 328 is more than the westfield to insure it has less power more weight and traction control Quote

At renewal time I do the same and trawl the price comparison sites for a better price. Elephant have always price matched as long as the quote is like for like. It's tedious, and I tell them so every time. Strangely I haven't been asked to complete a customer satisfaction survey, but it's only a matter of time Quote
Guest Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 had similar experiences wit AON , had the elise porsche an convinience also the peugeot with them .... renewl this year they suggested peugeot and elise better on a multicar and quoted us for renewal . It seemed steep so i asked for the individual quotes and it was cheaper .... not amused and told them so . I then used a couple of compare sites and got their 2 polices adding up to £750 quid down to £590 ,with the peugeot quote halved . so the pug went to privalage. Sold the elise and got the audi and asked aon to swap cars .... group 20 elise (as 160's or in the top bracket) vs group 20 audi .... there answer the anual premium jumped from 440 to £795 !!!!!!! i argued alot down the phone as we have used themfor years but nothing ..... tesco compared the audi and insured it for 382 VS Aons 795 again with privilage , aon finally admitted they were trying to claw back some heavy losses ..................... dombanks Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 "I can understand either how the 328 is more than the westfield to insure it has less power more weight and traction control" same with my mondeo, worth sod all less likely to be crashed or nicked yet more expensive to insure??? My insurance went down considerably when i put swimbo on, she's younger and has less no claims. but its something to do with not being a single male driver, anyone else takes the whole policy out of this catagory even if its obvious your mum is never going to drive the car Quote
Norman Verona Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Reason it's cheaper with spouse or parent as named driver is that you're less likely to drive after a drink if there are two drivers. Insurance is based on statistics and the premiums will go up the higher the statisical risk. They've also got to make a profit so the above is b0ll0cks Quote
lukeyboy Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 They always confuse the crap out of me!! Direct line renewal notice for a new Golf GTI was £480, their web sit was £324!! Checking out a second hand Porsche Cayman S the other day, full comp, protected £550 (value of motor £34k)........ I was paying £580 on a two year old Civic Type R!! Quote
Mark Stanton Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Car insurance is nothing but legalised theft IMHO Why should someone who has a clean licence and no claims in past 5 years have to pay increased premiums every year on a car which is depreciating in value and why do I have to fully insure every vehicle I own when I can only ever drive one vehicle at any one time Quote
dombanks Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 i agree with you there mark... why can it be the person who is insured? i guess its cos they cant assess the risk of the cars you drive but perhaps they could band it so say you pay so much and can drive cars up to certain values etc. i think there is some sort of limit on my 3rd party liability for other peoples cars. something like it can be 2 groups higher than the one i have now which is ace as the v6 mundaneo is group 16 (yes 16) lol i wish it was like that 1 insurance drive any car even if it was within a range. im not sure on this but i think is OZ or newzeland the road tax also insures the car 3rd party. might make up for the huge amounts they want to charge. chrisshorty Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 can totaly understand your anger. when i passed i was paying £1600 on a 1.1 pug 106 tpf&t . now having just turned 20 im paying the same price on a 1.4 megane for tpf&t and nearly £2k on my westy fully comp. its the ones who are innocent that have to pay for the ones out there who just want to rally around the streets. frubpato? Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 careful what you wish for guys. having worked with a few insurance companies , quite a number are doing the pay as you drive tests. a sat nav based transmitter in your car monitoring miles driven , areas used and (this is the kicker) driving style and speed. all used to assess risk and send you a monthly bill. Diesel westfield anyone.? Quote
kitemark Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Im 24 and have stuck with an insurance company for the last few years as they have given me 3rd party on other cars since i was 19. its so useful for work and ocasional personal times (when my car is in bits) to be able to jump in another car. I guess im paying a bit more than i could be else where but its worth the cost! my defender 90 costs me about £600 a year fully comp with 4 or 5 years no claims, the westy is cheaper but curently on a limited mileage. Its another cost that stings, but i still think its worth every penny for grin factor of my (new to me) westfield that i get every time i drive. shame it gets so expensive to own a proper toy. Quote
