simon2501
Hi im enjoying my new pride and joy, a red westie se narrow bodied, ford kent 1600 bored out to 1700 with twin webbies and a gearbox.......but don't know what gear box it is. Can any one suggest they way forward, when she gets warm and in town mainly i get difficulty in selecting first and second gear, alarming when in traffic!, i wanted to know if i could swap out this 4 speed box for a 5 speed box, i think its a type 9 but am unsure as the previous owner seemed not to know either. it has been fitted with a new clutch cable but again im not sure if its the right one and as it is at the end of the adjustment something and was purchased through ebay(as a bargin) is itching me to say its probably not the one fo the job. So in short is it possible to simply swap over gear boxes ford 4 speed for a 5 speed? does any one have any good advice on clutch cables and does any one think the two might be connected ie loss of 1st and 2nd when hot? Cheers, hi im new here Simon
Hammy
Check that you can get reverse without it crunching - if you can't then its a clutch cable/adjustment problem and not the box - You can make/fit a collar from a bit of pipe to entend the cable where it fits onto the bell housing to give you a bit more adjustment. If this doesn't fix it I'd give it an oil change. You will still need to sort the cable out if you swap boxes anyway - I have a Mk1 Escort cable on mine which is the right length ( type "E" gearbox) ( but your pedal box may differ) Before you throw your box away beware that you might also need to change prop shaft too, you might also have better ratios in your 4 speed than you'd get with a 5 speed and a change would therefore ruin performance - so check out what you have first (boxes can be identifed from a picture of the top of the box taken from within the engine bay -take a pic and post) The gear shift may end up in a different place too and you might have to move a top tunnel chassis member to clear this as well as move the gear box mount itself -so not a quick out and in job! DPM
Hi, I have a SEi narrow car with a 1700 Xflow and are in the middle of changing the 4 speed box to a 5 speed due to the gear change being awkward, also my son lost my first gear on a track day. I have done several shearches and placed a couple of threads on here and got the information needed to get all the parts prior to the change. If you are going to do the change let me know and I can let you know all the details/parts or any pit falls prior to you doing the job. So far its not to bad (I have the engine/gearbox out and just cleaning up prior to putting it in, hopfully might get it finished in a week) Dave Email me on david@mawson.karoo.co.uk
