Jeff2 Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I've decided to get a satnav for my westy, can anyone recommend a suitably small one and how best to fit it. The model I've neen looking at is the Garmin Nuvi 300. Nuvi Regards Jeff Quote
lukeyboy Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I've always got on with the Tom Tom unit fairly well, had a couple of the lower spec units and they've been ok. Quote
pistonbroke Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Ive tried 2 different models in the Wessy both with the same problems 1. Almost impossible to see the screen at any decent speed because of shake & vibration 2. In direct sunlight they are crap even when running at a crawl 3 . Cant hear the voice directions cos of the exhaust noise . Pretty useless I thought Quote
simonbell Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Think about what you plan to use it for......if it is A to B then the 300 will be fine. If you want to plan a route with multiple waypoints then you need to go fo a nuvi which supports that, AFAIK the 700 series is where this function is added. We hold monthly runs in nise7ens car club and I program a route into my 710 and then follow that on the day rather than messing about with maps etc. You can't do this on models below the 300 series. I'd recommend Garmin, the mapping is excellent, especially if you plan to go to Ireland, they use NAVTEQ maps which have the best coverage in Ireland. Quote
simonbell Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Pistonbroke I have no problems with the 710, it is widescreen so more than big enough and also bright enough when running of a 12V car supply. I run the audio through my Autocom. The 710 has the added bonus of having an SD card slot so I have a 2Gb card with music on it which I also play through the autocom, the music is muted when the garmin is giving a voice instruction. bedlam age Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Jeff, Garmin Nuvi 250 Compact and full of features, I used it in Spain 2 months ago and it was spot on. I'm off to France next weekend in the Westy and it's coming with me. I have an areoscreen and had adapted the bracket to fit the centre post where the screen is mounted to the scuttle. It works really well and you can see the screen ok as it just below the areo screen , the size is just right too. Get a 250! Mark Quote
Jeff2 Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 Thanks everyone, The 700 series is over my budget, I think I will go for the 250 or 300. Cheers Jeff Quote
simmi Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Jeff. I use a tom tom one. and it's brill ,nice and compact, BUT as it's been said difficult to hear in the westfield. do they do one with an ear piece, now that would be good? Neil Quote

Paul Ash Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Garmin Zumo 500 or 550 gets my vote. Comes with two mounts 1. for everday car - suction mount (Integral speaker) 2. motorcycle mount - fits beautifully on bar under dash. blue tooths to phone & headsets. Also MP3 player. (Bluetooth speaker / headset reqd. Lots of goodies pre loaded The best bit is you can program your route and load it in. It then follows the route you want! And its waterproof Look at website My New cheap electricals Works well with "Scala Rider Teamset" Quote
combatsapph Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I run TomTom through my mobile phone (Kaiser/TyTn III) and pipe the audio into the bluetooth in built into my helmet. Quote
