had my westy for about 4 months now and love it to bits

I have loads of receipts covering the build but nothing to give me an idea about the state of tune for the engine other than a receipt for the purchase. It goes very well and is on twin 40's power seems to come in at around 2500-3000. I have a spare 205 block and have decided to build a spare with the intention of dropping it in when completed, now, I am looking to achive around 160-180 running on twin 45, should I go for an overbore to 2100 ? what head and cam should I aim for, it will be used mainly on the road but I would like to try a bit of hill climb next year.  I want to stay with the pinto to old to start messing with ecu@s and things reg of the car is Q206 yux so if anyone knows the car get in touch.

read the book, how to power tune ford sohc.  Covers everything in great detail.  There is an electronic copy floating around somewhere.

I have a 2.1 Pinto, fully balanced with lightened flywheel, stage two Burton head, (bigger inlet valves) and an F2 stockcar spec cam, gives 172bhp @ approx 6500rpm. It's on twin 45s. Revs freely to 7000, and pulls from low down. Smooth tick over, no problems driving in road conditions.  :t-up:  :t-up:  More fun on the track though.. ;)

I have 2.1 pinto with std (old leaded) head std size valves, head ports has been tidied up & polished. GP1 cam. Twin dellorto 45's set up at boggies. No other mods & makes 168bhp@6066rpm & 155lbs torque@5500rpm. Duno if i wana spend any more on big valve head when i seen some not making as much as mine.

I have 2.0 pinto, the bottom end is standard (apart from the RS sump) its got a Ferriday head and 286 cam, running on twin 45's, on setup at Northampton Motorsport it did 166bhp at 6200 rpm.

so i guess it depends which bit you want to spend the money on

Ok read the book and very informative it is but now I am confused, one piece of advice says never go above max oversize then they say go oversize to 2.1 so which to go for? It has to be rebored because on stripping it was found to have a broken ring that has scored the bore. Also is there a difference between the inlet manifold for 40's and45's

theres no difference on the manifolds they are both the same.

as for std bore size or 2.1 its realy a matter of how hard to plan to drive it if you want to thrash it to death in every gear on a track and rev it to 8500 rpm plus then keep it to standard bore sizes if like me its for the road the 2.1 is a good bet as it also gives more torque.

please remember if you go 2.1 its not just a rebore as the block needs decking  as the v6 piston height is lower

or you could try burtons who do some special pistons that are the same height as the standard pinto but the 2.1ltr dia

as always they are not cheap tho

good luck dave

i have a 2.1 block still with the pistons and crank fitted sat in my garage if you want it? no head fitted but you have that and the sump too.. make me an offer and it will need collecting too - its just too heavy for the posty...

Thanks for the offer but my block is now in the shop being rebored. For anyone else going this route AE do a +93mm standard piston which is a straight swop with no other machining involved, giving 2100cc. Decided to  a little porting to the head myself its a injection head and unleaded so thats a bonus. Need to sort out what cam just looking for fast road any ideas?

I have a piper 285 with matching followers sitting in garage, approx 2500 miles on it if you are interested. With a 'good' head and 45's it should be good for 150-160hp.

For 180hp you will need a very well setup big valve head and something like a 300+ rally cam. Mine has a crane 310 rally cam and group one head, 187bhp @ 7400rpm on the engine dyno on 45 webers. I have 48 dellorto's ready to fit which are apparently a better match to the pinto than DCOEs, according to engine builder can add approx 5bhp. ???

been looking at the piper seems to have a good power band also been looking at the Burton BLF40/41 both seem very similar 2000-7000 rev band. This enjine build was going to be a long term project doing things as and when funds become avaliable, swapping in the new motor in the winter but as with everything else with cars they just run away with you and your money. give me an idea of what you are looking at and I will look at my finances.

And did the engine builder happen to have a set of Dellorto's sitting around? I'll bet he did...

hi Blatman, no actually he didn't :D  David Vizards Pinto book from the 70's documents that Dellortos are slightly better than webers for a pinto. Local bar talk also backs the dellortos are better claim.

Something about the size of the inlet ports, low airspeed and better fuel atomization. Not that I claim to know much about it.   I just happened to pick up a matching set of fleabay for a good price ;)

I have heard all those things too. I'll be interested to see if they stack up to a back to back compariosn on an *independent* set of rollers...
