chrisinoxford Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Thank you for your email. Under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act there is no provision to allow an unregistered vehicle to be driven to a DVLA Local Office for inspection. If you choose to drive an unregistered vehicle to a DVLA Local Office it is at your own risk. I would therefore advise you to transport the vehicle to the inspection at the DVLA Local Office. Hi. The law is the law and is written down somewhere, possibly the statute book or something. I do not accept one DVLA office allows you to drive to an inspection and another does not this is ridiculous. I want clear guidance on this please and is not for me to chase, I have had two different answers from the same office now no one actually knows the answer to this? I can drive to and from an MOT I can drive to and from an SVA test CAN I DRIVE to and from a DVLA inspection?? this is mine and many others burning question!!! If I hit someone driving or am hit or am pulled by the police, I want to be able to give them clear guidance that what I am doing is perfectly legal, as the first reaction when seen driving with no plates including most police officers is that I am an illegal driver!!!!! My local office is Oxford not that it should matter. My insurance company are happy to insure me if its legal to drive to the inspection. Your soonest response would be appreciated. Thank you for your email. You would need to take this matter up with the local DVLA office that is in the process of assigning a Q plate on to your vehicle. They would advise you as to the best means by which your vehicle can be transported around without a valid registration number being displayed on it. Details relating to our local office net work can be found on our Web Site. Please see below for further information. I am currently waiting for my registration plates and am due to have an inspection at your Bicester office this Friday. I have a kit car awaiting a Q plate. My question is, I know I am allowed to drive to and from an SVA test without plates as well as too and from an MOT. Can I do the same to and from the DVLA inspection, considering I am going to get my plates? Your quick response would be appreciated. Chris. Quote
wilsonch Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Strange this. I finally passed my SVA yesterday for my XTR2 then went straight to the DVLA office for the reg. I didn't have the correct documents with my and was told to bring them and they would then book my inspection which, i was told, I could drive the car to the office for said inspection. If thats what she said thats what i'll do. She did tell me off for driving to the office after my SVA, and said that i should have driven straight home. Chris Quote

The trouble is, ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law. just because someone says you can do something doesn't mean you are actually allowed to do it. I would even question her authority in saying so one way or another. Just playing devils advocate - it'll be a trailer for me come registration time - much cheaper than a fine + points if I were to drive and be wrong! Quote

Stevo Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I drove my car to work, then to the SVA retest (just a couple of things to re-test) then to an MOT, then back to work and then to the DVLA all without plates, passed loads of police and nothing bad happened. Quote
wilsonch Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 This is where the rules are an a**. I have driven a 160 mile round trip three times for the SVA in what could potentially have been a car unfit for the road, but allowed to do it never the less. Yet i am supposedly not allowed to drive 3miles to my DVLA office for an inspection of a car that has now passed its SVA please take this as a genuine question "Under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act there is no provision to allow an unregistered vehicle to be driven to a DVLA Local Office for inspection. " when it says 'there is no provision to allow...' can i read this as ' there is nothing to say i can BUT also there is nothing to say YOU MUST NOT' ? how many people do you have to ask to get the right information ? If i had not read this thread (which i havent officer) i have asked the person whom i think should know, the nice lady at the DVLA office (who is also going to do the inspection)........ Chris Quote
chrisinoxford Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 Anyway i bit the bullet yesterday and caned it the 15 miles or so to the dvla inspection with no plates, i ragged it up the A34 from oxford to bicester for my dvla inspection and i loved it, however it was rush hour and i was a little worried i would get pulled. Funny thing was the girl from the dvla was great 5 mins inspection job done, then another kit car a tiger pulled up behind me he too didnt have plates .............. he had come further............ whats the fuss about got back safely......... roll on next week i will be on the road.................whoooohooo Moral of the storey............. the DVLA are a fu£$%ng joke................civil servant jobs work red tape bureaucratic toss pots who need to get a life.......... they cost the tax payer a fortune in wages......... anyway i am not bitter "like the murphy's" Chris.
