Sean P Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 As a long time landy lover I would be inclined to go for a late 300TDI rather than a TD5 of this era.The TDI is much more home mechanic friendly than the TD5 no complex electronics to go wrong.Alternativly check out a couple of the online Landy forums for more opinions/advice. cheers,Sean (1996 300TDI and a part built SDV Sierra Westy) Quote

samcooke Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Toothache is far less painful than land rover ownership. It may seem good money but it won't when you've spent twice as much keeping the thing on the road in the first year. If you want a 4x4 for 4x4 work get a Japanese one, Patrol, Landcruiser, Trooper etc. Though Defenders are cool. Quote
Scottish Bloke Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 OK, I asked and you gave your honest opinions. Descision now made, Lisa can't even reach the pedals. Cheers Rich Quote

Norman Verona Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 We had no problems with the V8 Disco we ran for 4 years. The Range Rover was a different story. Broke down (recovered) 13 times in 12 months. Lynne was frightened to use it so on the 13th breakdown it was taken back to the selling dealer. It stayed with them for 6 months whilst we argued. The law didn't help at all and in the end we lost £12,000 on it. Did someone say something about toothach? YOU'RE WRONG it was worse! Quote
Spire Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 It’s amazing how you get such differing comments about cars. I've owned Range Rovers and disco's before, my dad has had a RR since 74 and two of his customers have done in access of 80k miles per annum in their disco for years. The only breakdown we have all had is a broken fuel pump and a loose crank pulley (main dealer service fault). The item they all had in common was sensible servicing by my dad once out of free servicing from main dealer. He is very old school believes in repairing parts not just putting new ones on all the time and good preventative maintenance but he is a tight git at the best of times Choosing cars like most things is down to personnel preferences. Personally I wouldn’t touch a Jap 4x4 or car Quote
