Guys.

Just took purchase of a spare engine!!

2.0 VX XE Redtop.

We are going to strip it down to the bare bones and rebuild it over the next 12 months or so.

We intend to make it bigger better faster stonger a bit like the 6 million dollar man, but we dont want to pay as much as the bionic man.

What advise would you give as to the rebuild, what parts are worth buying and installing to make this a mean engine.

Price is obviusly important but we would consider anything expensive or not.

We want to make a really powerfull engine with as many worth while bits as possible.

So off you go chaps bulid me an Redtop with serious grunt.

Cheers guys.

Chris.

Guys

Budget unknown, however as its over 12 months i might not see the money disapear so maybe 2k +

Paul, thats a hefty list, what sort of HP increase you looking at there?

I only want to add stuff thats really gonna work rather than a few HP gain for mucho dollar!!

Cheers

Chris.

Thats moving from a STD engine on TB's to 230BHP.

Maybe a little more as I have added headwork.

But the rest of the car was built with this in mind, so Exhaust, Clutch, g/box,propshaft, diff already sorted prior to this upgrade

So roughly 30%  more power, but putting in the right bits to go futher fairly easily when finances permit.

Mainly Valves ,CNC head work & dry sump to go.

Don't spend a ruck of money on building a nice spec' XE and then bolt a standard Westfield or similar exhaust manifold & System on it

Budget for nice system...

Do a detailed budget for the engine, but be perpared for it to end up more         :D

Alot will depend on what you want to use the engine for   ???

ECU £500?

Rolling road set up £300?

Bottom end balance? £50?

Flywheel £100?

Cam bolts, head bolts, Mains bolts, flywheel bolts, crank bolt £50?

I could sell you a nice 2.1 block and ported head which would be a very good starting point :D  :D  :D   Oodles of torque and 250bhp+ depending on cams.  Also steel rods, head stud kit and a few other nice goodies.

That would defeat the cause of building myself, incidently how much?

£1600 gets you ECU, manifold,Tapered TB's, wiring harness, Sensors, TPS, air filter.

MAP pre-installed on the ECU.

But yes my list is missing

Crank balance

Lightened flywheel £200

ARP flywheel bolts £50

Swindon Cam belt infill plate £98

Paul.

If you could only choose 10 things out of your extensive list in order of importance/ power what would they be?

Cheers.

lightweight crank (standard)

arrow rods

slipper piston's

new oil pump

baffled wet sump

modified rocker cover

cams to suit your driving ability

verniers

throttle bodies(direct to head)

last of all rework the standard vauxhall " low noise" head that already has big enough ports to cope with most of the above.

IMHO of course  :D

I would start by asking what do you want the engine for? If it is fast road then there is no need to go to the lenghts of Pauls list. If it is intended to go racing then his list is pretty much spot on. If it is to learn how an engine goes together then again I would do a standard build with blanced bottom end lightened flywheel and possibly omega pistons first. That way you are dealing with the easier bits first before risking damaging really expensive bits like a ported head through lack of experience. It will give you the basis for an engine that is upgrade able.

What have you got at the moment, ecu wise induction etc?
