Blatman Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Lots of us know all about the new tax on "gas guzzlers" etc. Did you know that the government were planning a similar hijack of motorcycles too? Lots of us bikers have signed the car tax petition, can I ask all us car drivers (see how I straddled the fence there? ) to join yet another oppressed group in their struggle to be treated fairly and equitably? Ta... http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/motorcycle-tax/ The detail of the petition is as follows: Changes to the law mean cars emitting less than 100g of CO2 per kilometre travelled would be exempt from paying Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax), while motorcycles are still required to pay. This was outlined by your Chancellor Alistair Darling in his first budget last week, under the auspices of rewarding motorists for driving ‘green’ vehicles. Despite Darling’s aim, the rate of road tax paid by motorcyclists is set to double in 2009, with the annual charge for a typical 125cc commuter bike set to grow from £15 per year at present, to £33 in 2009. This makes a nonsense of the revised rates of vehicle excise duty, as motorcycles tend to emit less CO2 and use less fuel than cars, with the average CO2 output from motorcycles at 110g/km. So why do those who ride greener two wheeled vehicles, use less road space and do not contribute to congestion get penalised whilst 4 wheel motorist whose vehicles use under 100g/km are exempt from road tax .... makes a mockery of your plans Quote
Fat Albert Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Meh! In a parliamentary answer the DoT confirmed that the budget proposals for Road Fund License are forecast, by 2011, to provide a net reduction in CO2 produced by private motoring of... 1% The same answer also confirmed that the net revenue raised would double to £4bn annually It is generally accepted that the transport sector produces about 33% of CO2 in european democracies, of which a third is air & sea travel, a third commercial road use leaving the remaining third or 11% of the whole down to private road use. So the 1% reduction that will double revenue is forecast to produce a 0.11% reduction in CO2 I signed it, but I have zero confidence that it will influence these buffoons to give up their gravy train, only the ballot box will get their hands out of our wallets Quote
longshanks Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 QUOTE only the ballot box will get their hands out of our wallets Unfortunately I think even that is being overly optimistic.... do you think if the Tories were voted in at the next election they'd get rid of all these additional income generators? I suspect not.... Quote
dombanks Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 although i dont mind lending my support, £15 to £33 is hardly going to break the bank is it. i know there is a principal involved but fiscally a £17 increase is a bit different to a family car going up by 100's Quote

Blatman Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 Plus that's the rate for 125's. If you ride a bigger bike, you pay more on a sliding scale, same as you do if you drive a gas gazzler compared to a smaller vehicle. Yes it's less than a car, but as noted, it's the principle of the matter, something the government seems to take little notice of... Quote

The issue is that it's nothing to do with CO2 as a 125 scooter produces so little anyway and should be encouraged. Quote
Claude Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I've signed, but I'm sure they only put these petitions there to placate the public, and don't take any notice of them. Thieving devils Claude Quote
MVS Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Signed. I have 2 wheels in my blood, which is boiling as I hadn't spotted this. Disgusted- this is the 'Government' aiming at a soft target, it thinks. Quote

Blatman Posted May 9, 2008 Author Posted May 9, 2008 Thanks guys... QUOTE Signed. I have 2 wheels in my blood, which is boiling as I hadn't spotted this. Nor me. Yes we're yet another soft target, just like all those losers in the 10p tax nonsense, and all those families who bought a "cheap" second hand people carrier who now find themselves massively out of pocket come RFL renewal... Like I say, we have a government without principle, which is not unusual, but it's a labour government intent on penalising the poorer sections of society in favour of... well, the treasury... Quote

I think they're just desperate for cash to feed the madness that's been going on under Bliar and now Brown . . . they don't give a sh*t where it comes from, they're like a heroin addict who just needs a fix, regardless.
