Hi all

I've noticed that my diff breather is spraying oil  out all over the place. I've got a ~6" breather pipe runing basically vertically which I thought would be enough to prevent this.

What's the normal solution to this? Should I have a catch tank, or a different breather solution? I wouldn't have thought a catch tank should be necessary as I'd then have to be checking the diff oil level all the time.

Thanks for any ideas / pics etc

Not a long enough pipe -  ;)  ;) make abour 2' 6" and keep it as high from diff as poss then tie wrap it to chassis above diff - make it 3'   :D  ;)

or grab a diff breather - looks like a "bobbin"  :)

:D

3' should do it - I can tie wrap it up the side of the roll bar  :D

What's a diff breather then? Some kind of filter? I'll do a search!

is the plastic insert in the correct position?

there is a little cut out that lines up with a mark on the diff. if this is not fitted correctly it will spray more than it should. I also ran a good 12" of tube up the chassis rail.

Plastic insert looks ok - it's set with the open side of the bit in the diff facing backwards.

It's already bodged as the outer part of the plastic insert snapped off, so now has a piece of brake pipe pushed into it to join the breather pipe onto.

I'll try a longer pipe......

Put a couple of loops in the pipe...

If brake pipe is inserted have you reduced the effective pipe diameter?  Is it breathing properly?

Maybe get a new insert and 12" or more (way hey!).  If you have a really long one coil it like Blatman says..

I guess there's a chance it's not breathing properly as the brake pipe is indeed a little smaller than the original tube, plus I didn't have this problem before.......

New diff breather inserts seem as rare as the proverbial rocking horse stuff - ideas? No time to go scrap yard trawling in the near future, certainly not before Stoneleigh.....

The part number for the one in my diff is in this post.

It takes a bit of a fettle to get it to fit.
