JeffC Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 the bottom speedo cable on a Mini. Oh Christ yes! changing a steering rack on a mini will beat that Quote
Norman Verona Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Jeff, I always found a rack change easier (but longer) than the speedo. Back in the 60's I was an apprentice at University Motors in London. They were the MG distributors for the SE and had been the sole distributors before the war. A few of us got together and formed the Mini Bay. By specilising we all became very proficient at doing all the main jobs on Minis and 1100's. We develpoed tyhe tools for changing crankshaft idler gear seals in situ (before some busy body from the factory saw them on a bench). We could overhaul gearboxes on Minis at the rate of 1 and a half per day. The time for each one was 19.6 hours in those days. We pooled the hours and split them 5 ways. At the age of 17 I was taking home £60 a week. (Avg wage in London in those days was £20 pw) I have changed a clutch plate in a mini in 36 minutes. I wonder if that's still a record. Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Another vote for V8 headers I remember, you gave that job for me to do! Yeah I aint stupid Quote
chazpowerslide Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Now. let me see. Stripping a fully built car to fit welded in lugs on which to mount the cage. Modifying, triangulating and strengthening the rear bulkhead on a Narrow Body SE. Same as above but with the tranny tunnel. Cutting the hole in the tub that the exhaust manifold goes through (ask Mark Jackson) Fitting the spacer washers either side of the rear upper damper mounts on an SE/SEW. Oh and on a Mini, lower speedo cable bah!!!! that's nothing, fitting the clevis pins and then the split pins that connect the brake and clutch master cylinders to their respective pedals, THAT'S fiddly............ Chaz. Quote
Leon B Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Replacing the rear crank seal on a VX, means removing the whole engine and box, stripping the sump off and loosening the last crank cap. Then you put it all together, pop it back in start up and its still ruddy leaking!! Quote

Childs play. I`ve just finished swapping the engine on a Corsa C over with a replacement unit without removing the gearbox or dropping the front subframe, it was only after doing the job that I found in the workshop manual that it is (apparently) impossible to remove and replace the engine WITHOUT removing the gearbox or dropping the subframe. Same went for my transit when I replaced the camshaft a while ago, according (again) to the WM its impossible to remove a refit with out taking the engine out and turning it upside down, but I did it in situ. Worst job on a westy..............pulling all the bits off a mangled chassis when I bought it and trying to figure out what it should actually look like when its not banana shaped. Quote
flat_four Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Handbrake cable on an Alfasud (operates on the inboard front brakes). Officially it's an engine-out job, though it is just possible to do it if you don't like your knuckles... Quote
stu999 Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 QUOTE worst job to do on a westfield? Just for Jeff - fitting a V8? Generally - virtually *any* job on a FRENCH car Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Generally - virtually *any* job on a FRENCH car Oh yes b****y French cars Quote
Lurksalot Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 The worst job I've had to do was turn off the ignition after a day at Oulton , I just want to keep going round and round Quote
