Arm Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Some tuners fiddle with map to make the mpg look. Do a tank to tank check. My Treg is about 10 % out. Quote

JeffC Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 have a 55 plate one (from new) on my drive at the mo'...most fun tintop I've ever had, nothing gone wrong yet. Tows great, well put together.Have chipped it, hubba hubba. Which remap did you go for? I bought a chip from a guy at Cadwell last year...fitted it...noticeable improvement (in ascending order) in economy and torque but not so sure about power. Remove it, effect goes away. Econometer shows overall improvement from 45mpg on a long journey average to almost 55mpg on the same run. Further evidence, engine labours in 6th when towing without chip, everything hunky dory with chip. Car going back in November, want a chip? all plug ins throw the computer on Vw"s giving false readings . Peter does yours plug into a large round plug with a dozen or so wires or a two wired plug on the corner of the engine Quote

Asterix Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 rectangular snap-on plugs immediately in front of the right side of the engine eek heres a clue to whats inside the box nope, none the wiser, recognise it as a resistor of some kind but that's as far as I get. Enlighten me? Quote
JeffC Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 at a guess it will be a 175ohm resistor in your box , for a 150bhp, you will get a slight gain in performance but it will only be the same gain you get on a cold day, the resistor tricks the ecu into thinking the fuel is at a lower temperature physics lesson of the day Quote

Towed the Westie up there early morning (when it was colder) without chip. Fitted chip at lunchtime, towed Westie back in afternoon, noticeable difference in performance and towability. Only bought it for £20, may be worthwhile taking it to bits at Xmas just to see what's inside. Quote
JeffC Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 they do get a gain your right, but If you sampled the difference a remap would give you would be amazed Ps. I used to make /sell them on ebay cost to me inc the vag connector was 12p each Quote
dombanks Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 what about these diesel "chip" things that flug into the ECU? from the sound of it what you do is take the big plug out of the ECU plug it onto the "chip" and then plug the chip onto the ECU or are we talking about the same thing? Quote

I used to make /sell them on ebay cost to me inc the vag connector was 12p each But a remap costs, comparatively, much more. It works and at the price I paid for it, it's worth it. I also remember checking the ECU readings against mileage/ fuel usage with the chip fitted and the ECU is still accurate (i.e. the economy improvement I suggest, applies correctly). Quote
McSpreader Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I too have a FR TDi 150. Had since new, 3 years+ old now and 55k on the clock. Generally very pleased with the car - although clutch slip has come and gone a few times. Considering the info I have read about clutch slip on chipped (and standard) cars its seems the weakest link of the powertrain. Have a look on seatcupra.net forum and there is plenty about clutch slip / chipping / etc. Must say - I would have another..... Simno Quote
