Jeff2 Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Hi I've seen a number of westies with mud flaps on the front cycle wings. Is this a good idea or are there draw backs to fitting them. I would like to do something about the amount of c**p that is thrown over the car and passanger when driving on anything less than clean and dry. Jeff Quote
perksy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Made mine out of 4mm rubber sheet and secured them with pan heads Formed them slightly on the width so they keep their shape Aslong as you don't make them too long they'll be fine They stop alot of the stones and s**t from going up the side of the car Quote
chappers Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 £5 Halfords hard plastic mud flups on mine, same as Steppenwolf's, though I didn't realise he had wider cycle wings, since I had to cut the beading off mine. Stops some of the crap though. Quote
perksy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 and don't reverse up a kerb Even if you ain't got mudflaps Quote
Asterix Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 and don't reverse up a kerb Even if you ain't got mudflaps I was referring to demi-kerbs Quote
pistonbroke Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Mine made from the front and back of a plassy oil can , just cut to shape and mounted with 3 nuts / bolts on each . Very light Very cheap Very Green been on car for 3 years have done 2 C2C etc still going strong . Save the Planet Quote
Guest Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 You too can have Mobil 1 on one mud flap and the specification of synthetic oil on another!! Always a goodn cosurce of materials though Quote
Scottish Westy Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 A few of us have fitted these click, certainly keeps down a lot of the cr@p. I have them just long enough that they scrape the ground at a few mph but clear at about 10-15mph. Quote
Mid life crisis Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I have a pair made from the clear plastic strips that are used at the entrance to warehouses, factories etc. The type used to allow fork lifts in and out "if you know what i mean". They on the whole work quite well, but not up to the conditions at Ty Croes Quote
Jeff2 Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 Thanks Guys I'll get some rubber and make the flaps. I was concerned that flaps might guide stones and stuff up the inside of the cycle wing causing a jam between wing and tyre. Jeff Quote
Boxerman33 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 If someone wants to make a set of templates I'll get them made in KAYLAN (used by all the works rally teams) and WSCC members can have them at cost !! Quote
DIY Si Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 I would certainly suggest some. They would've stopped most of the dead rabbit I ran over covering my arm. Which was not so nice. Quote
chappers Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 If someone wants to make a set of templates I'll get them made in KAYLAN (used by all the works rally teams) and WSCC members can have them at cost !! What thickness Kaylan do people suggest. Would 3mm be too flexible and bend up too much at speed, or would say 4mm, thick be better? Quote
Jeff2 Posted March 7, 2008 Author Posted March 7, 2008 Well, Rory's Dad was kind enough to give me some rubber - thanks Martin. All I have to do now is cut the rubber to size and fit them. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to attach them to the cycle wings? Unless anyone says differently I intend to attach them using two M5 button head screws, washers and nylock nuts; what do you think? Regards Jeff Quote
