Asterix Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Have a minor issue with Head Restraint for this years sprinting. I've got MMS pictures on my mobile but no way of posting them up at work. There are pictures of the car on the net but searching for them would be too conspicuous (IYSWIM) so here goes with a text explanation. I'm running a low back seat (at the moment) that is set right against the rear bulkhead. The car has a caged cage that has a lateral diagonal cross just behind the rear bulkhead. All of the cage bars are padded (with the pukka protective stuff, NOT plumber's insulation). I had bought a DT headrest, but it will not fit. Am currently wondering whether to NOT fit a headrest because the padded cage will provide the protection (n.b. that is not the same as my own personal protection and my own attitude to risk - I'm just interested to know whether the car would pass scrutineering as is. Have looked into the Blue book under Cc and all I can find is para's 103 and 104. 103 starts "Head restraints, where fitted…" so let's discard that and go on to 104. 104 says, "a head restraint should be located such that the helmet cannot move past it or get trapped between the rollbar and the helmet" Any scrutes (or amateur scrutes) on here want to venture an opinion? Mark Stanton Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Padding on roll bar (even pucker stuff) won't be acceptable as a head restraint tried it meself I think there is a minimum dimension for size of head restraint something like 100mm x 100mm and this must not be any further away from the back of your skid lid than 50mm - Please check as its from an old memory Quote
custardtart Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I have just swapped my high back seat for a low back foam seat set against the rear bulkhead the same as you. I have a vertical piece of flat steel bar welded between the underside of the diagonal roll bar and the the top of chassis frame directly behind the centreline of the seat. I then drilled a hole in it and bolted my own head restraint which I made from a piece of sheet steel approx 6 inches square to which I covered one side in high density foam and finished it off with a couple of layers of black duck tape. I then welded a bolt to the middle of the other side of the steel plate and used a nylon locking nut. Quote
windy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Worded a different way - If in the unlikely event you did get it wrong would you want to have your neck trapped under the rear diagonal of the roll hoop whilst bouncing across the tarmac? Quote
Blatman Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 IIRC, Caged/Caterham may well have an appropriate fitment for a head restraint on a Caged cage Quote
