Snagsey Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 I am a new Westfield owner and I am sure this question has been posted before. But, I am wondering what MPG other users get for their cars, I'm sure my carburretors need adjusting/servicing. I've done very little miles (but spirited) since I got the car (poor weather etc) but I'm only getting about 15-18 mpg. I've got a standard engine pinto 2l , dellorta 40 with the usual mods etc. If someone can tell me what to expect from a well set up car (what I intend to do in the future). Urban/rural/combined (frisky) etc? Quote
Steve Williams Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 I have a 2 litre Zetec on Weber 40's. I get around 120 miles on 19 litres - 28 mpg or thereabouts. I did have to tune my carbs, and at one stage I was only getting 20 mpg. If your engine is running rich you will probably get a lot of soot coating the rear of the car. Quote
Snagsey Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 Thanks, I know its running rich it has all the symptoms. you've given me a target to aim for when I get it sorted. Its like pouring half a tank of fuel down the drain... Ouch! Quote
Hammy Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 I've a cross flow which gives around 22 mpg, sometimes upto 24 ish. This is apparently typical- if you get in this range I'd say it was about right. Doesn't seem to matter if you take it easy or not Modern 16 v lumps should be a bit more efficient. Quote

Urban/rural/combined (frisky) etc? Plenty of opinion here. Could you describe the "usual" mods? There's not really much in the way of "usual" when talking about Westfields. They're all different... Remember though, slightly rich is better than slighty lean. *Very* rich is bad for the bores and rings. *Very* lean is bad for compression 'cos you'll melt a piston... Quote
BillyWhizzz2002 Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 I got a 2.1 pinto, twin 45 carbs, stage 1 head with race cam. When on the Big roads crusing in 5th i be getting over 30mpg but drops to half that with a little spirited driving on twisty stuff. Quote
Snagsey Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 Belated response to Blatman, the engine is a ex sierra pinto, 1993 cc. Dellorta 40 twin carbs and kent fast road cams (these being the usual mods). There has been no serious tweaks, thats for certain. I dont expect brilliant fuel economy but 15-18 I know is rubbish. I think the previous owner fiddled with the carbs to get it to start, it still takes an age to start from cold. I know its running rich, and intend to look (get someone to) at the carbs soon. What I was hoping to find out was an average consumption for a average set up car, something to aim for when all is running well??? Quote
fraser.j.g Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Yeah my 1700 crossflow with 40's gives me about 100 miles per tank, approx 25 mpg Quote
BillyWhizzz2002 Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 I have found it totaly depends how you drive. Like i said earlier you can cruise nice and steady on motorways etc and get 30+mpg but get in to the spirit of things on twisty roads with lots of gear changing & 15 to 18mpg sounds about right. Go balls out & i bet you can get into single figures....So what you getting sounds not too far out mpg wise. But would defo get the carbs settup. I had mine done at dave boggs, that old geezer is a wonder with carbs especialy on pinto's. Charged me £50 all in with runs on rolling road. Quote
Martin Keene Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Assuming your not driving it like a nun, 15-18 is not *that* horrendous, it certainly deson't indicate a major problem. A good setting up is all that will be required. It's is hard to get a true MPG firgure from a Westfield, because they are to hard get *truely* brim full, which makes getting a datum to return to hard work. FWIW, most people get 100-150 miles out of a tank under normal conditions, depending on how good they are at filling it, carbs or injection, etc. This can also get as low as 50-60 miles if your using it as intended on a track.
