Martin Keene Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 And I do mean cheap. I want it for a bit of internet access, and downloading from the digidash and ecu when I go to fuel injection. Must have a serial port and a slot of a wireless card. WHY
stu999 Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Might be worth looking at companies selling refurbed unit mate? At least it will come with a clean install and some guarentee (usually). Worth searching for one with USB2 sockets too, as pretty much everything uses them nowadays...
adamnreeves Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Stating the obvious but USB replaced serial ports so newish notebooks will not have serial. You might find some older ones with USB1 and serial but USB2 and serial could be difficult. I bought a USB to serial convertor and I used this to download to my megasquirt.
stu999 Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Dell have (or at least did have) USB2 and a serial port...
Martin Keene Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 I bought a USB to serial convertor and I used this to download to my megasquirt. I heard they were notoriously unreliable...
adhawkins Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I've got one I bought for precisely that purpose (downloading from Digidash). You could probably have it for 50 quid or so. Not sure of the exact spec, but it ain't great. Andy
Martin Keene Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Might be worth looking at companies selling refurbed unit mate? Do you know of any companies doing such a thing? About to disappear to a meeting so can't start searching atm.
gee_fin Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 eBay is your friend in this case. I tried the USB -> serial for my Motec and it wouldn't have any of it, Motec would only see COM1 and you couldn't set the USB -> serial to be COM1. I sold a nice HP/Compaq (modern one) that had a serial on eBay the other month. They're good system and ~£400-£500 for *current* spec.

Providing it will literally download from a digidash and ecu, plus a bit of basic websurfing, in other words not downloading huge files/video's etc. it could be just what I'm after. Should be easy to sort collection/delivery/something through that Marshall type bloke...

Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 Series Win2000 Professional Serial port VGA port Parallel port CD rom Floppy Modem PCMCIA slot 128MB Ram 4Gig Hard Disk P2 500MHz processor The only problems I know about are that the hinge on the screen is a bit 'floppy' (if you're not careful, the screen can fall back flat), and I'm not sure just how good the battery is. I always made sure it was fully charged before I needed to take it somewhere, and didn't run it on the battery unless I absolutely had to. It could certainly talk to the Digidash on the Throbber without any problems. I think you probably have the newer version, but I doubt there's any difference. Let me know if you're interested. Andy
