Emissions VERY high on a new build 10x over

my zetec 1.8 silvertop with mbe ecu.... is running with its emissions 10 times the limit..... first time running getting ready for SVA.

idle tick over round about the 900rpm, throttle bodies (jenvey) are balanced out and equal; voltage on the throttle potentalmoeter is .71v (as per manual).

The ECU is very hot; i could touch it but i wouldn't want to hold it for long! is this normal?

Mark walker is off on holiday till monday and Simon tried his best... but the guru has left the building!

any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.....

From http://www.bobmckay.co.uk/p_emissions.html

a good starting point...

---If a vehicle fails for high CO at idle and /or fast idle then.... if Lambda is too low, the mixture is too rich. This can be caused either by a misfire or by a faulty Lambda sensor. If it's running very rich, the 02 and HC will be higher than normal.

---if it has a high Lambda and high 02 (0.5 to 1.5%), the "CAT" could be faulty. Before condemning it make sure its hot enough to work, the Lambda and other sensors are working OK and the exhaust downpipe hasn't got any leaks.

---if the vehicle fails for high HC then ...if the CO passes, the vehicle is probably misfiring. Or if the CO fails and the Lambda reading is too low, the mixture is probably too rich and it may also be misfiring.

---if the CO fails, the Lambda reading is high and the O2 reading is high (0.5 to 1.5%) the "CAT" could be faulty. Again check out the simple measures above before condemning it.

---if the Lambda fails then...if its too high the Lambda sensor may be faulty, the mixture may be too weak or there may be a hole in the exhaust downpipe.  If Lambda is too low the sensor may be faulty, the mixture may be rich or the vehicle may be misfiring.

If the ECU is *VERY* hot, check the impedence of the injectors with what impedence the ECU can handle. You wouldn't be the first owner to burn the injector drivers out on an MBE unit by making them run injectors they weren't designed for. And some injector drivers are not that easy to come by any more, so treat this seriously...

When you say the emissions are 10x the limit - can you be more specific?

i think it was the hydro carbons but basically... she was drinking petrol like anything.... very rough running.

we had ignition on all for chambers, back firing a little and very noisey...

the mechanic with me just said that it was overfueling... and all the think he could change we did, but we wondering if the wiring or ecu could be the cause.

hope that helps

Excessive hydrocarbons indicates unburnt fuel. But that doesn't in itself mean the engine is running too rich, as some assume - usually a mixture that is far too weak will create excessive hydrocarbons. Backfiring is also an indication of weak mixture.

However, 'drinking petrol' contradicts this!

It really could be so many things, that without actually seeing figures etc, it would be difficult to give an educated guess unfortunately... :(

Edited to correct the speeeling of 'educated'!

update and next part of teh problem....

spoke to simon naughton who rang mr. walker the problem is the throttle index map has not been setup!!

should be a linear line and mine is all over the place, with the 965e mbe ecu and easymap 5.5 it won't let me save it etc asking for an unlock pin.

i have tried 1111,1234,0000, 111 and the rest of the usual suspects; have you any idea of the unlock code?

cheers

If you can find someone with a zetec map for the MBE, get them to email it to you and upload that. Passwords are carried along with each map, so that should sort it.

There must be lots of people on here with your set up, post up a request for one. What specs your engine? I've got a map for my car put it's not the same model ECU as yours.  :(

Have You tried communicating with your 956 ECU using Easimap 4  instead of 5.5   ???

Have had problems in the past trying to connect to 956's using Easimap 5.5 and by switching to Easimap 4 have been able to sort...

Easimap 4 is available to Download on MBE's website

I had the a similar problem smelt of petrol when engine running basically not firing on 2 cylinders. Be careful as neat fuel (at higher revs) in mine basically caught the cat on fire the whole exhaust was red hot. The ECU was burnt out on one of the outputs. I took it apart the damage near the output transistors was really obvious. Bizzarly it was hard to tell if the engine was running as it should as I had nothing to compare it with. When I did get it fixed wow what a difference smooth as anything.  Reckon the ECU was like that when I got it! I've noticed other people on here with similar issues.

If it's a WF supplied part they should swap it out no problem

resurrecting this old thread.  can anybody point me to the way to get to the pin code using windows calculator alluded to by persky earlier in this thread ?  I can't access the 956ecu in my own car, despite already having had access previously (argh ??!!) . Trying all sorts of random codes has resulted in no access now though. I've got an image of the full ecu 32k file so hopefully in there somewhere is a way to get to the pin code ... ??

any help appreciated
