Barry Ashcroft Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Been running HDMI cables all round the house today and had to use extra boosters if over 10m What is the lengh you can run with an Ethernet cable from my router as I want to run these around the house at the same time. Any recommedations for suppliers of cables. Cheers Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Not sure Barry but we use them for the cctv at work and some of them must be 40+ meteres long Quote
Asterix Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 use econnect homeplug you can get 85mb all over the house very easily Quote
ChrisG Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Cat5 will easily reach anywhere in the house unless you have a huge mansion, I think the maximum length whilst staying in spec is something like 100m. Cat5e (which is what you'll most likely get) is about 350m, so either way you're safe. As for cable supplier, how much do you need? If its a single 10-20m run for the router then you might be better off buying it by the metre from somewhere like Maplin. If you need more then either try and find someone in the trade to order you a 305m box (usually £25-30) otherwise it will cost about £50 from somewhere like Rapid Electronics Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Yep - 100m for cat 5 cable. Ready made 30m ones are circa £7.50 off the bay of E. Beware ones that are straight thorugh which will not be of any use to you Quote
ChrisG Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 A straight through cable will be fine from the router/switch out to a PC, its only if you're connecting PC to PC without a switch / hub in the middle that you need a crossover cable. Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Absolutely correct - my mistake Quote
ChrisG Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Actually, Ive not ordered any for a few years having changed jobs, but looking at the Wadsworth website where we used to order it from, its gone up in price quite a bit from what I remember so the £50 price from Rapid isn't too bad at all. Leon B Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Ive got miles and mile of the stuff hanging around in my garage. Our contractors buy a box for every job and often only use half of it. Lucky for me Quote
adamnreeves Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 yep ethernet is good for 100M according to the specifications but I have found that no always to be the case but you do not have to worry about it in the house. Anyway what's wrong with WiFi ? Quote
