crossflow engine

yep the engine says 711m. Ill take the manifold off tomorrow to check the size of the bore.

If anyone can tell me what you would exopect this to be it would help.

Will I also need to check the diamiter of the port on the head?

Dont get *too* worried about the size of the exhaust pipes. TBH, unless the engine is a real fire breather, they look about the right kind of size to me. Most xflow exhaust manifolds are well oversized for their power output - I think it possibly comes from the thought that big = less restriction, so must be better for power. In the real world however, the slower gas speeds of bigger pipes have possibly hacked the bottom end power considerably ;)

However, what doesn't look too clever to me is the pipe join that can be seen in the picture (Where the primaries meet the secondary pipes - the '4 into 2' bit - presumably the other behind is identical). That *does* look to be a power robber... :(

I might be wrong but wasn,t there a smaller bore 711m block as well as the 1600, I,m shure someone will correct me!!!!

I'd leave your manifold on mate, I don't think the bore of the manifold is that far off, much bigger and you would struggle to fasten it on.

Its defo not a stock ford manifold anyway, looks stainless, its 4-2-1 and the headers look pretty well matched so I wouldn't worry about it unless it really is restricting it and I can't see that if you have a 234 cam.

Rough guide I would suggest 1690, 234 cam, 40's, still on dizzy you will be looking at about  120-130bhp at the wheels with a fairly decent head.

IMO If you are disappointed with the performance your comparing with something pretty serious or there's something up with it.

I have a similar engine with a good head running mapped ignition and although we all like to think we can drive and need / could handle more power I'm still to out drive my car and I've never been left behind on any run out on the public highway.  :D

ditto A4gom - unless you're used to driving some serious hot hatches then the 1690 in a westy should blow you away, certainly to start with.

If it hasnt run for a while the carbs could well be due an overhaul & balance, you may find its not breathing as well as it should be which would affect performance quite dramatically.

The exhuast looks a very similar bore to my 1760 so as per Stu999, dont get too bothered by it.

You can get carb overhaul kits for less than 20 quid - if you go through it methodically it really is something a novice can attempt ... i should know cuz it was one of the first things I did when I got my westy!

On the subject of getting the engine breathing. On most of the wetfields i have seen they have cut out on the bonnet where the air filter is to allow the air to get in. Mine does not have this. Will this be retricting the air flow and hence saping the power.

Also has anyone used Dennis Vessey in Barnetby for any work. He is advertising in Westfield World and Barnetby is not to far from me. As my car as stood in a garage for 18 months before I purchased it I was thinking of taking my car in to get him to set up the carbs etc.

bonnet cutout will allow for a cooler airflow so a little power will be lost if there is not one, but not a huge amount in the scheme of things ...

Deniss Vessey comes well recommended from what I see on here so he should be able to sort you out.

Dennis comes well recommended but from my talks with him he likes to charge, if its a xflow on carbs and dizzy I'd recommend a trip to bogg bro's its a little further from you but you'll have change out of £70, get a cup of tea, maybe some cake or a sandwich depending on your time lot and it will be a great trip back when the cars running sweet down those nice back roads  :t-up:

Cheers guys, do you have any details for Bogg bros, eg where they are and a contact number?

Had my Westy set up by Bogg Bros when it had a Crossflow fitted, very friendly and excellent value for money.  :)

Here they are Bogg Bros
