crossflow engine

Guys

I have just got my first Westfield. It has a cortina GT crossflow in it with twin webbers. I have been advised that it has been fitted with a kent cam but am not aware of what else if anything has been done to it.

However, to my knowledge ford only made a 1399cc and a 1599cc crossflow engine yet my log book states it is a 1690cc.

Is there anyway of finding out what else if anything has been done to my engine and why it is listed as a 1690cc.

its very common for the xflow to rebored ... I had a 1760, some have even taken them out to over 1800 on a 'newer' block.

1690 is a very common rebore and combining that with a kent cam along with twin webers is the most usual upgrade.

There's unlikely to be much else hidden away under there i'd imagine but the only way to find out is to open it up ... 'and ya dont wanna do that do ya now!'

If it has been re bored to 1690cc would it give it an increase in power

It would increrase the engines compacity, thus giving the engine more bhp & torque.

As already said, without further examination it is hard to see what else as been done. I'd say you would have a Cam like a BCF2 and possibly a polished/poted head.

A Duplex timing chain is also a good upgrade.

Can you post a picture of your engine?

Would also be interested to see what exhaust manifold you have.

I am led to believe ther cam is a kent 234.

Exhaust bore looks a bit small to me unless its just the photo or the the ports have not been opened up, mines a 1660 and is bigger bore manifold than that one, check to make sure its a m711 block as well.

Could be a 1399cc??

Log Book says 1690cc.

Exhaust manifold may be restrictive. Swapping for an after market item would improve breathing.

All this is of cource if u want a bit more oomph, if not, enjoy your car as it is.

Cant work out what the metal bracket looking thing is to the left of the engine mount and right of the alternator????

Guys this is great feedback but I am a little behind in the mechanical knowledge department. I would love to get up to speed so you will have to bear with me.

How would I check to see if its an M711 block?

How do I check the exhaust bore? and what should it be if it is a 1690 bock?

re. the exhaust bore. You could always nicely ask tcc21racing to measure the bore on his new 1690cc exhaust. It does have different shaped primaries but I'm not sure whether that makes a difference to the bore.

The metal bracket you see holds a plate on underneath the car that runs from the front of the engine to the sump. Looks like it has been added to give protection from scuffing or bottoming the engine.

I am looking for more oomph as you put it. When I got the car it was not running. I have got it running this week and had it through its MOT but have been a little disapointed with the performance. Not what I expected. This is what has prompted my questions.

The log book has not yet come back from the DVLA so I cant cjheck the engine number against it until it's back.

How would I check to see if its an M711 block?

(1) Looking at your photo, bottom right on the engine will be a selection on numbers/letters,,, "should" say M711.

(2) Remove the manifold and measure internal diameter at head or where it meets the silencer.

yep the engine says 711m. Ill take the manifold off tomorrow to check the size of the bore.

If anyone can tell me what you would exopect this to be it would help.

Will I also need to check the diamiter of the port on the head?
