Jamz Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Hi There Everyone, Been talking about building a westfield for a year or two now, and every week i concider it more and more. Been looking at the prices and everything, but the westfield site is a little confusing to me. What i understand is that you can get a kit using parts from a sierra for around 8k Cheers James Quote

oioi Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 howdo was going to post a link to a certain MC5 song, but thought that wouldnt be very welcoming to a newbie first state your objectives - what do you want to achieve? are you as interested in building the car as driving it? What sort of use are you going to do with it? Whats your budget? OiOi ps agree the westfield site needs a clean up Quote

kipford Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Two types of Single Donor Vehicle kits (SDV) available: 1. Sierra Based - Normally Pinto engine though you can use what you want. 2. MX5 based I SVA'd my Pinto Engined Sierra SDV about 11 months ago. Rough Spec: W/F Starter Kit W/F Completion kit. New Brakes, bearings seals etc. New Wheels/Tyres Engine fully rebuilt, rebore new pistons etc. Head lightly reworked by Ferridays Kent FR32 Cam kit Twin Dellortos from E-bay -rebuilt. Megajolt 3D ingition system. Plus an easy build time of 10 months Total cost less SVA and insurance = £9500 You can do it for less, if you shop around for parts. Quote
stu999 Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Unless you have set you heart on building a car from a kit, do not dismiss buying second hand - you will get *a lot* of Westfield for that kind of money - far higher spec than you could even dream of building for the same money As a bonus, you get to drive it straight away And there almost definately be stuff you want to do to the car even if you bought second hand, so the 'getting your hands dirty' bit is still there (always will be!) Martin Keene Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 What i understand is that you can get a kit using parts from a sierra for around 8k They do have a kit whihc user a Sierra as the donor, but I wouldn't even think about it for a second. Sierra's are becoming hard to find, if you do find one, it is likely to need a lot of refurbishment before using the bits and some of the bits are not best suited to small 2 seater kit car use. The new MX5 based car is a much better bet, MX5's are 10 a penny, lot's get relatively little use and they are already a 2 seater sports car. As I understand it, it doesn't cost anymore than the Sierra one either. Quote
Jamz Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 Cheers for all the comments guys... will have a look for the MX5 instead... I was looking on ebay for sierra's but they were all bangers or cosworths lol Quote
oioi Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 but do you definately want to build? as others have said you will get a much better spec car secondhand than building. as well as the monthly westie club meets, there is also the ne7ers - we meet at the church mouse between durham and chester-le-street last wednesday of the month, normally organise a couple of trackdays a year, plus blats out etc. its a non-make specific thing for all se7en type cars (tho westies are clearly the best ) we also talk sh1te on a mailing list - http://mailman.se7ens.net/mailman/listinfo to subscribe. Rory's Dad Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 I know about the money but, I must say, building your own Westy from the ground up is hugely satisfying experience, despite the odd problem. I was going to talk about skinned knuckles but actually, despite my numptiness, I've never got any off the Westy All IMO of course Rory's Dad Quote
fatbaldbloke Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 I went for a cheap Westie and then set about upgrading, so I could drive straightaway, see if I got on with it, decide what upgrades mattered to me and get the pleasure of tinkering at my own speed. Each to their own..... Quote
