Westfield import to BC Canada

I'm off to Canada as a landed resident early next year and very much want to take my Westy with me [read: can't bear to sell it so need to find some way of getting it there]

Now, my car is a self built Q plated vehicle registered in Sept 2000. As I understand it kit cars under 15 years old really cannot get into Canada without a whole world of hell.

So, is there any likely way I can either get my car re-registered to be 15 years old or am I going to have to sell up and move on :(

TIA for any input.

when I was in BC I saw a few se7ens - including a striker and a caterham.  stonking roads for them :)

try subscribing to the USA se7ens mailing list - www.se7ens.net and asking on there.  also try the dealer - http://www.manikllc.com/ although I am not sure how much use he will be.

Buy an older cheaper Westfield and swap the identities  ;)   and then resell it on

Seconded that. Had a lovely time driving through the rockies, albeit in a Chrysler voyager with the most asthmatic 3.3 litre V6 you can imagine. .. and in winter the skiing is fantastic. And I met my wife there. Can you tell I'm not jealous at all?

I think, as John says, swapping identities is about the only route. They will need to see some official evidence of the vehicle's age at import. However, do find out exactly what all the rules are before you make any decisions. You may have draconian emissions regs to deal with on top of actually importing it.

swapping identities sounds a little 'dodgy'

now i wish i'd done the age related parts registration thing when I registered it - instead I chomped at teh bit and took the Q!

grrrr.  this is proving more difficult than I hoped.

I think we are of great use actually! We provided Jon with the Transport Canada rules and regulations about importing his car (or the feasibility thereof).

Currently, one can only import a "starter kit" which is comprised of a bare chassis and bodywork. Nothing else is allowed and the Canadian citizen importing the kit (that is a key point BTW) must then sign a document stating they will not import any more parts for their starter kit. Canada does not recognize any other country's safety rules or regulations, apart from the U.S., and even then...

While there are a few cars running around Canada as you note, their importation has been a bit of a grey-market solution, with a very great risk of seizure by customs and Transport Canada. In fact, the Canadian Caterham dealer has recently had two incoming shipments seized by Transport Canada.

The current Canadian law stipulates that NO kit car (built or unbuilt) may be imported into Canada if it is less than 15 years old. There is some movement to extend that age to 25 years.

Credit where credit's due - Tom at Manik was very helpful indeed.

So now I have to figure how to make my car older :)

Crikey! sounds a bit draconian.

Then again, when I last tried to get into Canada with some equipment it got impounded for a week while I did a bit of sightseeing on company time :t-up:

Sounds like it's not going to happen without a bit of creative paperwork at the very least. :(

Ahhh the skiing...

I did a winter in Whistler, fantastic place (if a bit too much like Disney land). I think my girlfriend and I will be going back for another winter when she finishes Uni.

Thread hijack over. :t-up:

Exceedingly jealous

apologies, perhaps my wording was wrong - I did not mean to imply that you were less than competent!  just that the law is the law and you wont be able to do much with it.
