Rory's Dad Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 I'd left some masking tape on the tunnel cover which is powder coated black (because the hole for the gear lever needed some more fettling) for about 6 - 8 weeks. Tried peeling it off and it took some powdercoat off too . Hasn't gone down to the aluminium but looks a bit So advise you guys to strip off your masking tape asap. Rory's Dad Quote

Rory's Dad Surely masking tape should not be able to remove powder coat no matter how long you left it. I suspect that the surface of the panel was not correctly prepared, oxide removed, etched, whatever, I stand to to be corrected because I know little of the process. Quote
bhouse Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 You can get different grades of masking tape that are designed to be lefft on for specific periods of time without damaging what's beneath. Typical ratings are 1 to 3 days so 6-8 weeks is likely to see the glue setting rather nicely. Having said that , if it was capable of removing the powder coating I'd agree with Adam in that it sounds as if the powder coating wasn't done very well. I've had a few areas on my one year old Eleven where the factory powder coating has just lifted and peeled off - maybe the subcontractors were having an off day... Brian Quote
Blatman Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Same with gaffer tape. I usually give it a good plastering with WD40 or brake cleaner before attacking any tape that's been left on for too long. I know it's too late now, but for future reference... Quote
Rory's Dad Posted October 23, 2007 Author Posted October 23, 2007 The masking tape probably came from Aldi I probably didn't read the instructions (because there aren't any on the roll I helped it off with white spirit ... but I might have a word with Westfield Rory's Dad Quote
Arm Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 As above, surface preparation was at fault not the masking tape. Quote
Rory's Dad Posted October 23, 2007 Author Posted October 23, 2007 Hasn't gone down to the aluminium but looks a bit Just to be clear, it seems like it's taken off the top coat except of course there isn't one There's black 'shards' on the tape (corresponding to the texture of the tape) but it's still black over all the panel. perksy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Used to work at a company with Powder coat facilities and as has been said it's all in the Preperation/Process Chemical cleaning of the component part is ok but you can't beat Abrading it (Fine grit blast etc) to give the Powder something to adhere to What you Don't want is a nice shiny/polished component to try and powder coat You may well be able to 'Polish out' the marking on the Powder coat, But you may end up making it shiny... craig-c Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Just for Future info, it is best to use Panel wipe, you can get this from any good paint supplier, my brothers are paint sprayers, and they sware by it for moving masking tape, brilliant for moving Selotape residu aswell. Quote
