Crazy Eddie Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Right then guys I'm after a bit of advice after reading a few previous threads and wanting to get on the BB for the Toyo Tyres. GG sounds like the best compound (Road and Track) but what size? I currently run 185 60 13's on all 4 on my Megablade and was considering doing the same. However I noticed on a couple of other threads that some adviced GixerMark (IIRC) to go for 205 60 13's as it would give a slightly bigger rolling radius and so better top speed. My current Top speed is around 115 mph and does seem a bit low using a 3.62 LSD so my questions are: 1) What would top speed be? 2) Any other handling changes? 3) Would my speedo be way out? 4) Is it worth it? Thanks so much Eddie Quote
Guest Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 RaceCarDoctor was adamant that you need wider tyres on the back than the front to promote a less violent oversteer. I had 205/60 13" all around, and i've just ordered 185/60 13" for the fronts. Quote
Crazy Eddie Posted October 19, 2007 Author Posted October 19, 2007 Cheers so I should order 2 x 205 60 13's and 2 x 185 60 13's. what have you done about speedo then? Will it read much differently Cheers Eddie Quote
conibear Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 By changing the rears from 185 to 205, will not increase your top speed, but it will if you go from 13" to 14" if that floats your boat Quote
cidersurfer Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 It will only increase top speed by about 4%, so giving approx 120mph... so, as conibear said it won't make much difference... Quote
higgsti Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 185s all round on my blade and busa powered cars and handled well l on road and track. Quote
stewart pickles Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 eddie try using 5th and 6th gears mine tops out at about 130 with that diff Quote
ChrisG Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 By changing the rears from 185 to 205, will not increase your top speed, but it will if you go from 13" to 14" if that floats your boat Erm yes it will, a 185/60-13" has a smaller rolling radius than a 205/60-13" therefore makes the gearing longer. The "60" is a percentage of the width, so a wider tyre = higher tyre wall = longer gearing. The only way it won't increase your top speed is if you're already unable to max out the car due to aerodynamics. Eddie, download the BEC speed calculator from here and you can see what effect it will have in each gear. Chris Quote
ChrisG Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 eddie try using 5th and 6th gears mine tops out at about 130 with that diff That must be an indicated speed because a blade with 185/60-13s and a 3.62 will top out at 120mph, unless you're running different size tyres? FWIW though Eddie, the 205s will give you an extra 5mph top speed, and in my experience its a worthwhile increase with no discernable effect on acceleration Quote
JeffC Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 side by side there is quite a difference in size between 185 and 205 , Ive run 185 rears and its noticable on a long straight my busa tops out but by switching to 205"s it wont, from my experience the rear is more planted exiting corners with wider rears, when I tried 185 rears I spent a lot of time at 90degrees to the tack on the speedo thing I run a 3.16 sierra diff and max with a busa is 132.9 mph on 205/60/13"s thats on the limter, Im looking into getting some bigger rear tyres (slicks) to get top speed up as I struggle on longer circuits Quote

JeffC Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 245/45/13 it indiates 130 odd at 12k in top, till it blew up at ty croes now Im confused but I would think a 245/45/13 would be smaller in rolling diamater than a 205/60/13 thus giving a higher speedo reading than road speed surely my 22/50/13s slicks are about the same rolling diametr as a 185/60/13 as I have the same problem with revving out with those on Quote
ChrisG Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 it is an indicated speed but i aint using mamby pamby 185/205's chris 245/45/13 it indiates 130 odd at 12k in top, till it blew up at ty croes It was your comment about not using 5th / 6th then saying yours topped out at 130 that seemed to suggest you were making a like for like comparison with Eddie and that his should be quicker than it is. By coincidence though, 245/45-13" are almost identical rolling radius as 185/60s so still only give 120mph actual top end though according to my calcs, unless you've disabled the 11,750rpm limiter which it sounds like you might have done? Crazy Eddie Posted October 20, 2007 Author Posted October 20, 2007 Cheers Guys, Although now I'm a bit undecided as to what to do I had just filled the form out stating 4 x 185's as I figured well I can swap front to back when rears do start running down but now I'm not so sure I'm running 6inch rims so will the 205's be ok on those or shall I just leave it at 185's Cheers Eddie Quote
Kevin Jones Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 You can generally put 205 on 6 inch but the tyres move a bit more on the rim and some report not liking that. Toyo say, 5.5-7.5 for R888 205. I often do this and it doesn't really feel that much different to me. I think you need 205 or bigger on the back for heavy (track only?) use. Using 185s all round on track I find the front/back heat split is too much leading to excessive rear wear and poor traction split between front/back. For lighter use though you can handle this by front/back rotation to keep the wear even. Quote
