stanluxe Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 Hi there people, After spending 6 hours cleaning my car I think I have found the source of the whine noise on my car. Traces of oil on the diff case and splash's on the underneath on the chassis and tank area. I had a look @ the diff. No real sign of a leak, but I assume the level is low ? Now then, the diff plug looks like its been un done many times ( a little bit damaged ) What would i nornally use to un do it ?? I am told its granada diff !!!! Also there is a black tub sticking out of the top. Is this a breather or is it how I fill it back up again ?? Please help as its not getting louder but it kinda worries me. Also, , , more important the weather man says it mite be nice tomorrorw Kind regards Quote
Asterix Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 ...could be a feature? My car made funny noises when I started driving it 6 years ago. Still makes the same noises today, I just listen out for the new ones, iyswim Quote
perksy Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 Make sure the car is on level ground Undo the Plug Fill with the correct grade of oil until it just starts to seep out of the plug hole Replace the plug *IF* You undo the plug and the oil starts seeping out straight away You know the level is correct anyway You'll need the correct tool to remove the plug Should be a 'Square section' spanner Like this CLICKY The Black plastic tube will be the Breather *IF* you decide you want to replace All the oil in the Diff you will need to Syphon it out cos there Ain't a Drain plug Quote
stu999 Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 QUOTE You'll need the correct tool to remove the plug Should be a 'Square section' spanner Like this CLICKY It could require the use of a big allen key - 12mm IIRC QUOTE *IF* you decide you want to replace All the oil in the Diff you will need to Syphon it out cos there Ain't a Drain plug Or unbolt the rear casing for a more 'instant' approach Quote
In my dust Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Or unbolt the rear casing for a more 'instant' approach If you do, have the silicone ready..... Usually a 'whining' from the back of your car is the WIFE! Quote
Nick A Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 QUOTE It could require the use of a big allen key - 12mm IIRC 10mm Stu Quote

stanluxe Posted October 10, 2007 Author Posted October 10, 2007 The old drain plug is proving very difficult to remove ! Any suggestions, it is well battered Is it worth me looking for a second hand diff just to swap over ?? How hard is it to remove the complete diff ?? will a sierra 7" 3.92 LSD fit my prop shaft ?? how do i know I knew it was going all to smooth Quote
perksy Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 any chance of a Photo We could do with knowing just how b*******ed it is before offering ideas to get the Plug out Can you get the next size up Allen key in it with a bit of gentle persuasion Don't start stripping the Diff out yet Quote
scruffythefirst Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 any chance of a Photo We could do with knowing just how b*******ed it is before offering ideas to get the Plug out Your just a voyeur really aren't you! Hammer and chisel, bigger allen key, bigger torx socket, weld a nut to it, shout at it a lot and drink more stella, bit of heat etc etc Quote
rossco555 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Try a spline key in it, you'll have to hammer the spline key in. Make sure its as tight a fit you can get into the plug, as it may just strip even more. It should come out with a bit of persuasion, just be careful not to split the diff casing. Quote
stanluxe Posted October 11, 2007 Author Posted October 11, 2007 " Hey Presto " Thanks to a 10mm Snap On Allen key socket and Rob for lending it to me The diff drain plug is out . . . . . along with some very black smelly oil :-( So whats next ?? Examine the oil ?? Drain some out ?? Fill it with some new oil ?? Quote
perksy Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 Get All the old oil out and then re-fill with new oil Either syphon it out OR remove the cover plate I'd try and syphon it out first, you haven't then got to worry about re-sealing the cover plate (but it's up to you...) You can buy Syphon pumps, but i use a Big syringe with some 6mm clear pipe attached Quote
