chrisbin Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Have now established that the ECU in my car is one of the first ones they did and hence use DOS as operating system.. As a result I can't read it using my Windows 2000 configured Laptop. Have been in touch with Karl at Emerald and he confirms that this is known to be a problem - anything more up to date than Windows 95 can't cope apparently. Other than finding an ancient DOS PC somewhere ? Any other suggestions?? Only good news is that the rolling road I have booked has the "old" software too so should be able to read it. Just thought I'd post this to give all you Westy I.T. wizards something to think about Quote
Keith Scarfe Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 I have a similar issue with some of the systems I work on (at work not on the car). i.e. they use a DOS operating system and do not work with modern windows. What I do is have a 3 1/2 disk formatted as a DOS system disk (you obviously need to do this on a PC that has this operating system) with all the programs you need also on this disk. Then when you want to run your old DOS program, insert the floppy and boot from it. Note if your hard disk is formatted in any other system than DOS FAT (FAT32, NTFS etc.) you will NOT be able to read it when booted from the floppy. Hence all the programs, code etc. you want to access must also be on the floppy. HTH. Keith. Quote
chrisbin Posted July 24, 2002 Author Posted July 24, 2002 Keith - thanks for that suggestion. I've actually just had an email from Karl telling me he is hoping to have an upgrade to the windows based software that will enable it to "talk" to the older DOS versions. He hopes to be able to email by end of the week, so fingers crossed! Cheers Chris Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Why not just create a DOS boot disk and put the Emerald program on it? No need for the PC O/S to be used then. John Quote
garyo Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 I have the DOS software and it's on an MSDOS boot disc. I can email you an image or something if you like? Quote
garyo Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Chris, just read your other reply - if you get a version of the windows software that talks to the older M3d's could you forward it on to me too? I'd love a copy. Cheers Gary. Quote
westy Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 If you’re running windows xp (can’t remember whether 2000 supports it). You can right click on the executable in windows explorer, go to properties, and then you can choose what OS to run it under. You could also try in 2000 creating a shortcut for the executable and then mess around with the memory settings that it runs under...after all if it crashes it only shags your ECU but it would make a handy chip for say a budget alarm clock Quote
chrisbin Posted July 25, 2002 Author Posted July 25, 2002 Thanks for those offerings! One problem is that the laptop is "company" property(!! so don't want to go messing about too much. If I use our doemstic PC (the one that gets used for Barbie goes skiing, Teletubbies. etc etc! then I'll need a bl**** long lead to reach the car!!! I know, I could move it, but that would only be open invitation for SWMBO to start ......what you doing now? whats wrong with it? how much? thats all you're interested in....!!!! So, I am keeping fingers crossed for a fix from Karl at Emerald! If/when it happens I shall advise! Cheers Chris Quote
Ian Posted July 25, 2002 Posted July 25, 2002 I'd like a copy of that as well if you get one - I'm going to need a DIY mapping session after my forthcoming cam transplant! Ian Westfield SEi 2L Pinto (M3D ignition only) Quote
