Pilot Pete Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 I think MR C's engine had done something like 18 trackdays driven hard with no issues. I get the impression if installed right, looked after and driven conscientiously, they can be very reliable. Or at least I hope so. <!--emo& is that a hint from a future bec owner a possibilty for Sponge , but Ireckon it will snow in July before Mr crabs replaces the anchor with something more modern I mean for moi, on ones own, going alone, taking the plunge, oh you get what I mean. The Seer Posted September 16, 2007 Author Posted September 16, 2007 Once again, thank you everybody for you comments and replies. Most helpful indeed. What does eveyone think about the yearly maintenance costs of a BEC v CEC. Also would a CEC be that much more reliable for frequent usage? Thank you. Quote
cng1 Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 IMO engine maintenance costs are pretty insignificant compared to your other costs so any variation between bike and car engines just gets lost in the noise. Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Jeff, You really need to rebuild every 20 hours? Why's that ... just because of big-bore, or something else? I'm interested as i'm sure mine will get an upgrade of some sort in a year! -C Quote
JeffC Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Jeff, You really need to rebuild every 20 hours? Why's that ... just because of big-bore, or something else? I'm interested as i'm sure mine will get an upgrade of some sort in a year! -C 20 hours is suppose to be the most economical time to rebuild (or so the guy that built the engine reckons) In my experience I would say 40 track hours of abuse on a standard engine is when the box gets a bit sloppy start to find more false neutrals than normal , engines still seem ok though Quote
The Seer Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 yep and prob more than that but 18 trackdays = 36 hours driven flat out up and down the box and still was as sweet as the day it was fitted, to be critical if Id kept running that motor I would maybe have treat it to a gearbox rebuild but to be honest it didnt really need it, I oil change mine evry 3rd trackday, thats maybe overdoing it but at £50 per oil change I think its money well spent . my plan was fit a new engine (2007 motor cost £2700 ish) run it a full year then sell it on (get back £2500ish maybe more on ebay ) then fit another new one, that way for a couple of hunderd quid a year you are running a new motor then I bought this b****y carwith an engine that needs a rebuild every 20 hours I don't really plan on many track days. So a BEC is unadvisable unless I wish to rebuild the engine and box fairly often? Quote
JeffC Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 no you got that wrong for road use they will run for ever , If you are more road based I would get a cec Quote
The Seer Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 no you got that wrong for road use they will run for ever , If you are more road based I would get a cec BEC's aren't too friendly to drive on our roads? Quote
JeffC Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 they are fine but cec"s do it better a search would bring a lot on this very subject Quote
perksy Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 BEC's aren't too friendly to drive on our roads? Have you tried a BEC yet mate If you haven't the ONLY way you will see if it's for you is by trying one or at least having a passenger ride in one Agree with what Jeff says about CEC being better for the road Quote
The Seer Posted September 18, 2007 Author Posted September 18, 2007 BEC's aren't too friendly to drive on our roads? Have you tried a BEC yet mate If you haven't the ONLY way you will see if it's for you is by trying one or at least having a passenger ride in one Agree with what Jeff says about CEC being better for the road No I haven't. The only BEC I have ridden is a Radical SR3 when I was considering buying one. I believe it was the 252 bhp version, rebuilds put me off. As for CEC's an R 300 I've ridden in. Definately not the clout that the SR3 had, but relatively entertaining. I find most passenger rides enjoyable in others car's. Though only by owning one myself for over six months can I trully descibe it's pros and cons. Hence asking questions on here. If there's enough argument for BEC's. I'll have a one. Though I don't get on with it after six months I'll sell and try a CEC. Quote
samcooke Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 I dare say it's been said before, but get along to your local meet and get some passenger rides, you could, of course, also go to the factory and have a test drive. JeffC's engine needs frequent rebuilds as it's been tuned. Factory spec bike engines will last tens of thousands of miles and hundreds and hundreds of hours. I love my BEC on the road, the noise, the handling, the speed are just as relevant as on the track, but it does only get used for blats, not for shopping, commuting, Sundays with the family etc. If you want something for those things a CEC is better, but then, for those things you'd be better still in a Micra Quote
The Seer Posted September 18, 2007 Author Posted September 18, 2007 I didn't realise Westfield are still making BEC's?Maybe a trip to the factory is well worth it. I'll only be using the WF for no more than 6K per year and that will take place mostly on my own just for the odd thrash on my local roads. Quote

They are perfect for weekend sceaming for an hour for fun, taking a mate to the pub etc. If you want to tour Scotland with the wife then get something else, not that a BEC can't do that but the wife would probably prefer something quieter.
