adamnreeves Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 307 is 4 seater neighbour has one.How can you say a fwd boring 207 will be more fun than a mx5 2.0i vvt 160bhp diving the rear wheels with a lsd I didn't know all the technical details, but if the mx5 is rear wheel driven and lsd, then you make a very valid point. Last time I bothered to look at the mx5 it was 1.6 and quite slow sounds like they have made some good improvements. I presume it must be better than the SLK in every department except the badge! BTW, I test drove the 207 GTI 180 last year and was not impressed with it. Had to rev it hard no low down torque and it over heats in traffic. Quote
Vinny's Westie Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Has to have a folding metal roof I didn't think a MX5 had a metal roof. Don't you have a removable hardtop? If that's the case I would have a S2000 GT, less of them about, definitely the better car. The only downside is you have to thrash the living daylights out of the engine and then it goes quite well, living on the edge,....... some downside Quote
Crazy Eddie Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 From the 2 I would vote for the MX5. It has always been an understated driver's car and is great fun Has all the creature comforts to live with as a daily driver and you can't go wrong with Mazda reliability. As far as your criteria IMHO it ticks all the right boxes and I thing she would love it. Just hope my wife doesn't see this thread as she used to have the new Tigra (which by the way she absolutely loved) and always fancied the new MX5. All the best whatever you go for Quote
reaper Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 If you do gt the new Mx5 you're best off dropping the suspension by 35mm to its proper place. Much better handling. Mazda uk had to slightly raise it to get type approval Quote
Blacknblue Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Barry I had an SLK, last of the MK1s, brothers wife also has one, I would never have another. Mine was the 230 Kompressor reasonably fast, but crap handling. It felt like a big saloon car to drive. Also agree with the crap service. Girlfriends mother has an MX5, brilliant fun, hers is the ragtop version, tintop has got to be even better I recon. And recently I've had a couple of 307cc as hire cars, yes they're sort of 4 seater provided your back seat passengers haven't got legs. Build quality isn't too great, and as I found out this weekend - when it's raining seats get very wet if you open the doors, and boot fills with water off the boot lid whenever you open it. Quote
Kevin Wood Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I'd go for the MX5 every time. My wife has a year 2000 Mk 2.5 1.8. It has clocked up 100,000 miles, she drives it pretty hard and the only issue has been a failed coil pack. Parts are a bit pricey and dealers can be sparse but they're reliable cars with a good enthusiast following. The latest ones look a bit more lardy IMHO but they do have the folding hard top roof and much better engines. Mercs aren't the cars they used to be, by all accounts. Kevin Quote
Hammy Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 My vote goes for the MX5. The new model with the flared arches looks superb in some colours esp the dark reddish metallic and black . Metal folding roof excellent and good after sales service/built quality is supposed to be be very good. Didn't Top gear look at it - compared open top and folding discussing weight etc ? I would have thought the running cost of a big engined Merc would horrendous by comparison ( Service, petrol, labour charges) Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 Popped into Mazda dealer today to finalise the deal and noticed the service cost's board. 1 year/12500 miles £104 2 year/25000 miles £148 The BIG expensive service ay 75000 miles is £294 Bargain car to run Had to be done. Quote
