white van man Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Finally i have the chance to build a kit car. I think i have settled (pending a test drive) on the westfield Mazda kit. But i have no idea how to go about things. This will be my first kit car and im basically after any hints, tips, do and dont when it comes to building a kit car. Thanks WVM Quote
Tigger Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Welcome Mr WVM, Take the test drive and once you have made up your mind (which won't be hard) order the kit. This will probably take around 6-8 weeks to come through. Whilst this is on order, get yourself the donor and start stripping it. You should be able to get the build manual from Westfield's prior to the kit arriving so you can get familiar with the build up. You may also want to get some more tools (see list here) unless your a mechanic already. When kit has arrived, get a Luton van ordered and pick it up. Then you can start the process or asking techie questions on this forum like most of us do Once the car is built, you then start all over again with "Upgraditus" which will last for years, it's addictive beleive me. Hope that gets you started Tigger Quote
KerryS Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 ..and if you look in Cars for Sale on here there is a MX5/Eunos for sale even!! At one time, I thought WF were doing pallets of stripped car parts you would need? Oh and welcome! Quote
smithydar Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 one big point to remember is.. read the manual right through before doing anything. my manual seemed to do things later on that would have been easier done earlier.while not covered up by something else. i read the manual and rearranged the pages whicj made it a lot easier. it may help. or the manual may have changed now. samcooke Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 And, of course, join this fine club and pop along to your local meet. There's no substitute for blagging the assistance of experienced owners and builders. Quote
neilwillis Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 First thing I did was clear out the garage to make room for the kit. I painted the floor to keep the dust down, and whitewashed the walls to improve the light. After that, I made up a chart to tick off the days till I could collect it. Get hold of a manual, and read it till you know you could build the kit in the dark! First thing to do when you get it home is make sure you have all the bits, then sit in the chassis, with the steering wheel in your hands, and make loud engine noises while imagniary driving it round your personal choice of race circuits! A swear box in the garage is a good move too, by the time you finsh the build, at a pound a curse, you'll have enough cash to build another one! Just take your time, and enjoy. Oh, and welcome to the club. I believe you'll get a years membership with the kit. Quote
white van man Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 my build manual turned up today so i know have some lunch time reading Quote
Mike H Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Consider the option of collecting your bodywork later on - when you actually need it. That way it won't be in your way while you build the rolling chassis. Ask questions and don't assume anything or you'll regret it later! You don't want to be one of the many - "well of course if I was to build another one then I wouldn't have done this that n the other....". Mike Quote
Stevo Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Whenever you buy anything for it and SWMBO asks what it cost always tell her 50-60% of the actual cost. I'm sure I'm not alone on that one! Quote
