stevalical Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Guys Many thanks to those kind souls generous enough to help during my recent disaster and I'm glad to report that all was revealed when the head came off - - blown head gasket between 1 & 2 - - phew! Anyway, I've discovered that the previous owner wasn’t exactly honest when he described the engine as having a "Burton stage 1 head, fast road cam and vernier pulley". The head certainly has larger valves and a bit of fettling but the both the cam and pulley are standard. No wonder it felt breathless above 4k. Its running on twin 40's with a long 4:1 stainless exhaust manifold, what would you recommend I upgrade the cam to? Normal road use with (hopefully) occasional excursions onto the track. Anyone got anything lying around in their garage they want to move on? Cheers Steve Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Glad to hear the damage is as little as it is. Have you no recourse to the previous owner for mis-stating the car's specification? I think I might make a few suggestions to him; private sellers are not immune from the law for misleading statements I believe. My Pinto has a Kent FR32 Fast Road cam and Maxflow head from Vulcan Engineering in west London. It runs on twin 40s too - just about adequate with the right choke size. I don't know the power/torque figures though. It will hit the rev limiter (6k) in the first three gears easily and probably in fourth too, but not in fifth. Quote
Mac#1 Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 im running the FR32 too. Tickover is quite smooth, as is power delivery. I dont think this can will set the world alight but its not bad. I also know a guy with 2.0 (lightened balanced etc) and ported head with FR33. That car is a lump faster, id be tempted by that cam if i did further mods. Quote
Stevo Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 I too have the FR32 but in a standard engine on twin 40s (36mm chokes). I don't know how much the power improved has over standard only to say I can feel it has improved. It is on cam from about 3.5k up to 6k and behaves very differently in this rev range. Before 3.5k the engine is quite well behaved although I have a horrific flat sport at about 2k but I suspect this is carb/ignition related rather than cam. Quote
kidz Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 Recently parted with My MKII Escort RS2000, had FR32 and RL31 cams in it... If i did it again, would probably go for FR33, had stage 3 head from vulcan. Cannot recommend them enough... Any further info give me a shout... Laters Kidz Quote
combatsapph Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 I have a Piper OHC134 high torque cam - loads of lift (12.19mm) with +5% duration - just the way Pinto's love 'em! Should suit your big valves nicely. Helped me make 150bhp at the fly wheel when it was in the Sierra and that was only using a chipped ECU. Quote
darthurs Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 I've got a Kent GTS3 cam in mine with 45 webbers. It made 130bhp at the wheels last year after a tune up. It idles at just over 1K, there is nothing to shout about below 3K but once above this it pulls like a train. I am currently moving over to 3D electronic ignition to try to help with a bit of a flat spot at a steady throttle at 2-3K. It also drinks fuel, I can probably get 140miles out of a tank at between 60-70mph. Cam Info. Make = Ford Model = Pinto 2.0 Motorsport Profiles Part Number = GTS3 Application = Supersports Power Band = 3250 - 8000 Cam Lift = 7.97mm Valve Lift = 13.20mm Inlet 12.90mm Exhaust Duration = 312 Degrees Timing Figures = 53/79 89/43 Valve Timing = 106 Degrees Valve Clearance = 0.25mm Cheers Dan Quote
