Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I've got that by Melanie as well In fact I quiet liked her and have a few of her records from the sixties Remember Alexander Beetle Quote
Hammy Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 You've been on the Red wine again haven't you Kerry... I've got rid of my turntable just a couple of months back to part finance a new Cd player, but do hanker for vinyl from time to time ( I won't get rid of my LP's) - went to Zouch Audio recently, listened to a £40k vinyl system they had bought in for a special weekend - it did sound rather good ( if a bit OTT!!) and shows the quality is in those old vinyl pressings ( along with those cracks and pops unfortunately) Especially interesting is that some of the Newer Cd's ( e.g The Kaisers) really are poorly produced and don't sound too good, made for the low attention span Mp3 generation I guess... KerryS Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 I've got that by Melanie as well In fact I quiet liked her and have a few of her records from the sixties Remember Alexander Beetle Yup, I do! Apparently she is still touring and is in UK around now! Seem to be quite a few 60-year old rockers about, Stones, Quo, Tom Jones ...... Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I spent a an hour or so copying vinyl on to CD recently, A 1970 'live' Tom Paxton double album which has always irritated me by being arranged with sides 1 & 4 on disc 1 and sides 2 & 3 on disc 2. Now it's all on CD and plays in the right order! Kerry, this site might amuse you. Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I spent a an hour or so copying vinyl on to CD recently, Motco what do you use for copying vinyl to cd ? Now I've finally got an Ipod I really must get my vinyl onto cd and mp3. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I use a program called 'Audacity'. If you Google it you should find it's available FOC. I also use 'Wave Repair' which is free or not, dependent on what features you want, and that will split the recording down into tracks. The first program will export as WAV or MP3 once you've done what you want with the raw recording. To collect the signal I take a screened lead from the AUX o/p of my amp (actually, in my case it's via an open reel ReVox tape m/c but that's for convenience only) and feed it to the desk top in the AUX IN socket. Finally I burn with either the XP provided CD burner or 'Deep Burn' - another FOC program. HTH Quote
KerryS Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 I transferred some vinyl to CD a while back and used some shareware software called LP Ripper. I fed the o/p from the turntable - which after the last change of amp to a Cyrus needed an addition line amp to equalise and amplify to 100mV sort of level - into the computer, and used Roxio to a/d convertor. Did as onme file than used LP Ripper to separate it all up. The default track detector on Roxio was pants. TBH it was all such a faff I only did 3 vinyls and got tired of doing it. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 It is very time consuming, I agree. It makes you assess which LPs you really like! BTW Kerry, don't you need RIAA (?) equalisation from a turntable? Maybe that's what you're doing with the line amp? Quote
KerryS Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 BTW Kerry, don't you need RIAA (?) equalisation from a turntable? Maybe that's what you're doing with the line amp? Yes, the line amp does the equalisation and pushes up the low output to line level. The amp before the Cyrus had a true phono input, but these are a bit like floppy disc drives, ancient technology!! I still have the old amp, a Nytech, which is a typical small British manufacturers device with about 20W per channel but they British watts and seem to go further than Japanese watts!! The Cyrus 8 is a lovely amp though and together with the Cyrus CD7Q through the Ruarks makes a nice sound There won't be many domestic set-ups with a Revox r-t-r, always lusted after one of those Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 There won't be many domestic set-ups with a Revox r-t-r, always lusted after one of those It's an A77 7.5ips quarter track stereo, made just before the B77 was launched and remaindered at REW in Tottenham Court Road in the very late seventies if I recall, not a pro spec 'cos they like 15ips half tracks. I went through a phase of "sod the cost, this'll last". It has but parts cost a packet and tapes ditto. Luckily I got a load of 7" reel tapes sold off by the BBC, put them on some 10.5" reels bought from a pro recording studio in Marylebone, and still haven't used them all. Hardly use it now though - too lazy I reckon. I haven't got a cool amp etc like yours, though. Mine is an old Technics with AR18 speakers and a ReVox turntable (another story) plus ReVox tuner (2nd hand). Most stuff dates from the eighties or earlier. Quote
