pete g Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 is it possible to get arc eyes from a uv light [pond light] spend last night at hospital in pain and allday today. it was either a extreme case of hayfever eyes or arc eye from pond light .as i had it off to repairiit earlier that day [only 11watt and only saw it from about 30 secs] i have had arc eyes before but never thought you could get it from such a low level of light. much be more careful in future Quote
Gromit Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 The problem is you cant see UV light, so even a relativly low output light might be kicking out a lot more light in the UV range, you only see a small proportion of the light coming out of them UV tubes. I`ve had arc-eye meself, once and that was once too often. Hope your eyes settle down soon. Quote
stu999 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 If it is strong enough to kill the green crap in your pond, then I reckon it is probably strong enough to damage senstive eye cells... Quote
And Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Pete, you won't get arc eye as such, but you can have an issue with UV light causing the fluid in your eyeballs to fluoresce which can be very uncomfortable and impact on your eyesight. However I suspect with a pond light it will be of low output and this is more liable to be pollen related. Quote
pete g Posted June 20, 2007 Author Posted June 20, 2007 eyes settled down a bit today. tried some eye drops last night and eyes went worse than before. just using eye wash now and hopefully they will be ok. off to hoiday tonight ,so hope they ok for that. much admit i have had arc eyes twice in the past and anyone who has suffered it ,always say never again. this was not quite as bad [ie the gritty feel ] but the pain was just as bad ,plus loss of sleep did not help. once back of hols i may do some interenet searching on the subject. Stuart Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Definitely from the UV. We use UV lights in some equipment at work and operators have to wear safety shades that filter the frequency. Seen a couple of guys not wear shades and get exactly the symptoms you describe. Quote
blitz Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I agree with Stuart. UV lights of exactly the same type are used for disinfecting water, the process is very rapid and a short exposure is likely to cause damage. Be very careful with any UV source. Quote
