Paul Ash Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 It was so much fun 3 hrs to get out of campsite, 10hrs to get back to tunnel as could only muster 50Mph at best due to aquaplaning & with "Warm up/coffee" stops / traffic jams etc. & yes the wipers were on! But still a good time had by all Quote
Bluerallye Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Looks like you could have done with the safety car to shepherd you home! Quote
Paul Ash Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 Yes indeed, my friends car infront was cutting through the water to help minimise the aquaplaning. Then 10mins from Calais the rain stopped! Quote
scruffythefirst Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 We left at 6am so no queues, rain only started on the m11 and was torrential. Could only keep going on the way down by following one of the support cars with foglight on and sticking my helmeted head round the windscreen and driving down the white line. Quote
dean6767 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 got soaked on the way there, got soaked whilst there, got soaked on the way back. THE SUN CAME OUT THIS AFTERNOON ON ARRIVAL AT DOVER!!!! great time though. Quote
Westy1700 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Even with rain X on it was impossible on the way down...visibilty was minimal at one point and the only sane thing to do was stop and sit it out... from that point on i had the hood on, was as warm as toast and a damn sight better design and performance than the hoods of old... top marks for attrition to all those who braved it with no weather gear at all... the mud on the camp site was legendary.. Paul Ash Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 Rear view mirror fell off Nope, repositioned for better vision through windscreen, couldn't see out the back anyway cos of all the camping gear. hence no roof aswell Quote

chazpowerslide Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 The Cambs lot left a camp site that resembled the Somme (it even had rain filled trenches) at 6am so we drove straight out. There was a bit of rain on the way to the Chunnel but mostly dry so we had a cracking drive We got caught in the rain after the A11 turn off on the M11 and it was of biblical proportions. I got off the M11 and went into Cambridge on the A10, bearing in mind I have an Aero screen and was wearing Body Specs glasses/goggles visibility was not too bad. The AO48 tyres coped very well and I only aquaplaned once as I pulled onto the slip road of the A10 and went over the rain filled grooves (that the lorries have pounded into the tarmac) in the near side lane. Once I got onto the A10 into Cambridge the visibility was down to about 20 to 30 meters and the 20 mins drive home from there was pretty good fun. I have an unlined one piece Frank Thomas waterfroof and other than a wet head a damp neck (where the water had wicked down my neck-warmer) and a small damp patch on my chest I was bone dry!!!!!!!!!! Total journy time for me was nine and a half hours with about half an hours sleep on the Sunday night due to the continuing stag weekend next to where we were camped that was still in full swing to 02:45 Monday morning. Five and a half hours from Le Mans to book in on the Chunnel. An hour loading/traveling/unloading on the Chunnel. Two and a half hours from the Chennel to home. Cleaning/drying out the car may, I fear, take a little longer. Chaz. Quote
SparkyB Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I felt this photo summed up the journey down..... Chris F looks less than happy Kinda glad I took the tintop this year Quote
Paul Ash Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 I know how he feels, still all dried out now. Shame "Mad Friday" got stopped in Arnage, due to over enthusiastic people. Everything was fine until they started opening up car doors to get the occupents wet. The Gendarmes were not impressed & duly closed the high street. It did make enjoyable viewing A pat on the back for "Batman & Robin" too Here's looking forward to next year Quote
ChrisF Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 QUOTE Chris F looks less than happy At this point ChrisF was thinking, why the F**K am I here Then I remembered this.... and this.... and I'm trying to forget this... Quote
James_N Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Luckily I was in the volvo beater (with caravan in tow!) for this years le mans. I was thinking on the way back, i wouldnt like to be in a westie in that weather with my experiance! I did see a Tiger (I think, or MK Indy) parked up at the side of the road somewhere on the way to Rouen at 23:30pm, in the p******** rain broke down, and i did feel a bit sorry for him! Quote
