I have just ordered a Westfield from Greece, and I would like to have as an extra a Limited Slip Differential.

On the catalogue with extras is mentioned LSD upgrade...

Does anyone know which type of LSD they mean?

When I look to the catalogue with spare parts I see

a)3221132 Differential 3.36 LSD (new) £925.31 and

b)3221198 4.1:1 Freelander differential complete with Quaife LSD suitable for conventional engine range £1459.99

What are the differences?

I have read here (in this forum), about tran-x plate diff, about viscous diff, Sierra, ATB, Quaife etc...

The engine will be 1.6 with 150BHP and the car will be used both road and track.

If possible someone to explain what are the advantages and disadvantages for these types and what would be the proper choice.

I had experience with viscous LSD from Impreza and MK1 miata and my opinion was that these type of LSD, need more time to respond.

On the other hand Torsen of MK2 miata was much more fun and fast.

Plated LSD I have seen only in latest STI version , and even if is very very fast, is helped a lot from the other diffs (4wd car).

In Greece the roads are very sleepy (I don’t know how to write it) ... I mean the roads don’t have good grip.

Thank you very much in advance

Kalispera!

I know the Quaife ones are good and when the situation gets Slippy they cope admirably.

Just ask my Co Drive Sleepy :D

welcome, LSD come in various types but on your car you have a couple of options. For a car engined one the sierra type one is okay. The quaife variety is much better the ATB stands for Automatic Torque Bias and delivers a smoother transfer of power form the spinning wheel to the other, but at a price.

The others you mentioned are genrally for older escort type diffs.

The freelander is used mainly on bike engined cars as the ratios are better suited.

Kalispera (you speak Greek???) :p

So the standard on is viscous type???

Where can I find a plate type one?

Eyharisto *thank you

Be careful with plate type LSD's as these are often pre-loaded for much heavier saloon cars  ;) which is just too much for a much lighter Westfield

TranX and Quaiffe can offer plate options

Give some serious thought to a Quaiffe ATB option - much easier option and very suitable for a Westfield.

A viscous option can be found in XR4 and XR4x4 Ford Sierra donor cars

Kalispera, Vagelis!

Spent many nights gazing down at Thessalonika wondering what you were up to at 2.00am!  Flew into Athens, Corfu, Heraklion, Larnaca, Paphos, Rhodos, Kos,

Zakinthos many many times.  Also dozens of flights into Turkey (but you don't want to know that!)

The word you want for your roads is 'slippery', I think.  Another word is 'crap'......

Send an e-mail to Chris at BGH re a Quaife ATB. Think they're about £580 + vat + fitting (but that's if you supply a non-lsd to be changed).  Can send you accurate figures tomorrow if you wish.

The nightlife in Greece begins at 00.00 am . You can have fun till early in the morning as you know!

I like Turkey also!! We are about the same mentality. And as far as i understand Greeks an d Turks are friends! The problems are between goverments... sorry for the off topic... ;)

The information will help a lot .

I do not  have the car yet. I have ordered it and wait for it in August. I can order the LSD as an extra and have it fitted in the car ... bt what LSD will it be???

Spoke to Chris at BGH this morning.  You can contact him via 'sales@fishersportscars.co.uk' or by phone 44.1580714114. Correct price is (£) 520 + fitting 180 = 800 +vat 122.50 = £922.50. However, as I said yesterday, you must first provide a diff for them to modify from a breakers (about £50 - £80) with any associated problems re delivery etc.

Thank you for the answers.

The respond from Westfield was that exists one type of LSD, this is the viscous one with 2 different final drive ratios 3.36:1 and 3.92. They recommend the 3.92 for 1.6 engine.

The Freelander version is no longer availiable for convencional engines, but only for bike engines.

I have spoken with Quaife and the suggested an mechanical one, and tommorow that I will have more news from Westfield about inches etc I will folow up with more news.

You suggest better a viscous or a quaife one???

I use a Quaiffe 3.92 ATB diff on my 1600 VX and it's just fine  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)  :D  :D

Got it from Phil stewart at Road and Race Transmissions in Kent  ;)  :D  :D good service as are those so far recommended on here  ;)  :)

I too had my open 7.5" diff upgraded to a Quaife ATB by phil at road and race. Excellent service. He does actually come across some full diffs and did offer to sell me a complete viscous coupling 7" LSD, so it might be worth asking if he can supply a full LSD rather than just change the internals of one you have sourced. For a lobro type B diff he said the only real options he would suggest would the the sierra viscous coupling or a Quaife ATB, rather than a plate type diff. - depends how much you want to spend. :D

What do I need to expain exactly to Quaife, what kind of LSD diff I need from them??? I contact them end they asked me about inches etc....   I only know that I will get an 1.6 sport Westfield... nothing else.

Where could I look for a ZF or Cusco and what should I ask for??

How much preload should plated diff be for the weight of a westfield?

Are also quaife preloaded?

I have read in that forum, many help things, but the information are so many and for so many models... So sorry if some questions come up again...

Quaife will need to know the 'donor' vehicle that the diff originated from. Assuming that you have ordered an independant rear suspension car, it will almost definately be a Ford Sierra based diff, or less likely, but possibly a Land Rover Freelander diff.

If it is Ford (easy identification is that the driveshafts will bolt on using six bolts either end), Quaife will ask you about inches, because Ford diffs come in a number of sizes. The most popular diff is the 7 inch. The size can be confirmed by measuring the distance between the top mounting lugs on either side of the diff. The measurement refers to the crownwheel size, but luckily it just so happens that the mounting lugs are approx 7 inches apart too - and 7.5 inches for the bigger diff (which has a 7.5 inch crownwheel)...

Quaife were offering their ATB diff with an adjustable 'preloaded' option. I dont personally know of anyone that has actually tried one yet though. The beauty of the 'normal' Quaife ATB is that it doesnt wear out like a plated LSD does, and will not contribute to understeer like other LSD's sometimes do either...
