stevalical Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Guys, one or two of you know I've been looking for a Westy for a while and have recently come across this in a salvage auction. Anyone know the car? It looks like a xflow, agree? Does the damage look too bad to be economically repaired(not too sure what it'll need but it doesnt look so bad to an untrained eye) Your advise would be gratefully received Cheers Steve Quote
Paul M Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Dont know the car, only visible damage is to the nosecone which is easily replaced but it would not be in a salvage yard for only f/glass damage. Key is what has happened to the chassis/suspension components. Everything on a Westfiled can be removed/replaced so it is repairabe. Just depends on what they want for it now and how much needs replacing. Maybe someone from your area could go and have a look at it with you. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Not too keen on the spare wheel mounting... Quote
JeffC Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 could have had someone reverse into that and the owner could have insisted on a pay out through the other patys insurance rather than a repair , so could have had a claim against it with very little damage.. vehicles like that normally go on to cat x which is non recorded when you come to sell it and worth the same as a normal car Quote
ljsanders Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Could have also been a traffic light shunt sandwich incident, so check the backend for damage including around the fuel tank and diff mount area. I say that because of the spare wheel on the back, meaning spare wheel mounts could be broken. Is the tub round the back badly damaged? If so, its a new tub. Quote
Hammy Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 I'd want the nose cone and bonnet off for a good look at the chassis rails -the pushed back headlamp is a concern. Also a good look underneath on some ramps around the back ( good spotting the spare wheel) Take a tape measure see if everything is square (wheel base both sides) ; diagonally front to back from underneath - get an AA ispection ?? - might be a good project if cheap/straight enough ?? Shouldn't be too bad as its a X/flow it would't have been going very fast Quote
stevalical Posted May 17, 2007 Author Posted May 17, 2007 Excellent advise guys; it's a cat D and current bid is about£1100. Not sure what a cat D is ?? here's a pic of the rear end, again not sure if there's anything significant on show regarding the spare wheel Cheers Steve Quote

Darkspeed Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Looks like a narrow body low line - check with the factory what bodywork is available for the repair it's unlikely much of it is anymore Cheers Andrew Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 If it is a low line body then fitting a high line bonnnet and nose would convert it to high line body. A bonnett and nose are circ £4-£500. Could be a bargain! Quote
Bananaman Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Looks like Left front corner took what ever the impact was!!!!! You'd need to have a good look at the chassis at this point and any other for that matter, make sure everything is straight. W-Bones etc are replaceable BUT s Chassis is F@cked then it's gonna cost you about £1000 for new chassis, then you've got to strip the car and put it back together. All depends on how much it goes for A, against how much you'd have to pay to replace damaged items B verses what its worth in the end C If A + B < C then it might be worth it so long as X (the amount of hasstle involved does not out weigh all the other b0llxs i've just said... Darkspeed Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Tagged this off an ebay discussion about damaged cars - hope it helps. Andrew "Hi there, My Name is Robert Austin and I run a branch of Autospares and Salvage in Northampton. My family have been involved in damaged cars and the recycling of parts business for nearly 30 years. Here is my run down of what I know to be true.. A "cat C", car is a car which repair costs (after damage) outweigh the value of the car. A "cat D", car's repair costs are less than the value of the car. Cat D cars DO NOT NEED A VIC TEST. Cat C's do. They (VOSA)introduced the V.I.C (Vehicle.Identity.Check) to stamp out the illegal activity of ringing. All they do is check the VIN plate against the Chassis number and the engine number on their DVLA database. The V.I.C is not a test as such, you cannot neither pass nor fail it. As for getting the cars CATERGORY (C or D) taken away, you can no longer do this. You used to be able to do this at Autolign. They would asses the repair and confirm that the car has been repaired to a high enough standard to have its status renewed as a what we call, "straight car". If anyone is thinking of buying a repairable car either Cat C or D, do it. They are perfectly safe, as long as you have a repairer you can trust and their work is sound. There are, however, cowboys out there. Take someone who knows with you to look at the car before you buy. If your gut instinct tells you "no!", then dont go ahead, trust your instincts. People come to us and know what they are buying, they repair them and sell them. As traders, you cannot undisclose the history of the car. Private individuals, do not have to disclose that information though. There are all avenues provided for you on ebay to check the cars before you buy. But the best thing is always to view before you buy. A bit of a long chat but I hope it helps... " Quote

I asked this question in the Technical Help section a few months ago and Mark said that the Low Line body (nose and bonnet) is no longer available. However John is correct, the high line nose and bonnet are, or at least should be a direct replacement... even if they do look a bit 'sausage like'. Quote
