itbob Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Any advice very welcome. Very interested in buying a 02'plated 1800 SEiW, problem it has been an insurance write-off but fully repaired and rebuilt to a good standard. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/153951.htm Good news is that i have spoken to westfield and have confirmed that new chassis with same number as original was purchased (repairer had to chop out old number and send it to westfield). Seen receipts for new chassis and all the bits that where damaged, plus re-setup and also original receipt from salvage yard. Everthing seems fine and above board. What should i do leave it alone, or carry on with purchase. Cheers Rob Quote
spence Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Seem to remember a previous prospective buyer went to see the car. Then putting up a notice on piston heads how bad it was and how he had wasted 2 days and loads of money. One of the things he pointed out, was that the engine wouldn't run properly on tick over, if i remember rightly amongst other things he pointed out that he wasn't happy with. I'm not saying it's a bad car i'm just saying what happened. Don't think he was very happy anyway. Quote
Bean Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 How about this one? For Sale Section Cracking spec, very nice Quote
jeff oakley Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 What you have to ask yourself is are you happy to buy it? The car metioned before was a Yellow one that was repaired less than perfectly(allegedly). If you intend to keep it then buy it, but bear in mind many people will not buy a write off as they don't understand what one is and will run a mile. That is the only downside is the selling on if it has been repaired after being written off. If it has had a new Chassis then basically it is a new car no differant to any other apart from the mark on the paperwork. Quote
GSi Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I've got a written off Westie. Similar circumstances, written off, repaired by Westfield and rebuilt to a better than original spec. Only signs of the write off are two plates at the front of the tub where the wishbones were pushed back into it. Hence the write off (costs of the replacement tub). It has all the paperwork for the replacement parts and I tracked down the repair to Westfield, got them to inspect the car and provide me with a certification of straightness I then got a big discount off of the asking price as the seller wasn't aware that the car had been written off when they bought it a couple of years before. I know I'll have similar issues when selling on, but a) I don't intend to sell on in the near or middle future and b) I can advertise it an a sensible price to attract those who aren't so sure about it's status and c) I have the paperwork from Westfield to say its all above board. For confirmation there was a warning placed in the Pistonheads Forsale section relating to this particular car. Not making any suggestions about the quality of the rebuild or if it would be a wise buy or not but the statement did relate to this car, then again the p***ed off guy might just have not known what he was looking at and was annoyed he had (in his eyes) wasted his time to look at something that (in his eyes) was not "as advertised" Quote
itbob Posted April 23, 2007 Author Posted April 23, 2007 Thanks for advice guys, you settled my mind for me and Will be carrying on with purchase. I did speak to the guy who posted the notice on pistonheads and he did warn me, but after checking everything all seems fine, and with a reduction in price. Thanks once again. Rob Quote
Bananaman Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Check that your insurance copany are OK with insuring the car B4 you plash the cash. I was helping my old man buy a new'ish car recentley and we saw a 1 year old corrolla that had been a CatC writeoff, the repairs looked like they had been done well and a good price was agreed. BUT when he contacted his ins co they would not insure it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not saying that this is the norm but better check b4 you part with cash..... Also while i think, the car looks very nice, not many about in Silver HOWEVER i would think that it's been sparyed Silver after repair so as not to replace the tub/bodywork so i would pay particular attention to the repairs to the tub/bodywork... Apart from this if the car looks OK then i see no reason not to buy (Apart from the fact it ain't got a VX under the bonnet.... ) Quote
itbob Posted April 23, 2007 Author Posted April 23, 2007 Cheers Bananaman. Got a quote from Adrian Flux on insurance and they didnt ask or mention anything about not insuring accident repaired, but footman jones did when i got a quote from them. Unusual thing is that the body work is new but it has been resprayed in silver was originally dark blue ordered when they ordered new chassis. It could have a VX in a few years time, i will get use to it first. Quote
GSi Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 itbob, what kind of difference was there in the quote between Adrian Flux and Footman James? I didn't get a quote from Footman James when I got mine, but it's up for renewal soon. Quote
itbob Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 Footman jones quoted 398 and adrian flux quoted 240. I do have 9 points all SP30's (bl**** speed camera's ) Quote
GSi Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Ta, wonder how much of that difference was down to the declaration. Mine is about 240 with AF, but just the 3 points Was a year ago though and also depends on usage/location too I guess. Quote

Make sure your happy with the quality of the paint Be aware that Westfields being so low to the ground do suffer with stone chips and you may well have the original colour 'coming through' if you stone chip it.... I remember the warning aswell on Pistonheads and the bloke said it wouldn't run from Cold iirc this is a Throttle bodied car and it *might* just need the Map tweaking a little to cure it Quote

Next puzzle:- The owner of the car i'am buying has a private reg when he has tried to replate back to an 02 plate the DVLA want to come and inspect the car before replating, what could the reasons for this be, anybody heard of this before. Cheers Guys Quote
