MVS Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Might be worth having a chat with Slippy cos he posted on just this subject a while back. There are several ways, but usual ones include; 1. network cable and use the Wizard in Windows designed for just this. 2.Copy onto CD or DVD, or external hard drive or memory stick. Then copy back onto new PC Amongst others Quote
JeffC Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 that was easy , text the captain and get Pilot Pete to pop round and sort if Pilot you are a hero Quote
Hammy Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 As a matter of good practice you should periodically make backups from your computer onto some other media such as a CD or DVD - do this now and transfer the important stuff off your old computer. If you've XP then you can just drag the files onto the CD drive in my computer then write them to a disc. If you don't do backups what will do if (when?) your hard disc fails and you lose all your data, photographs etc ? When you are using your new computer, again back stuff up regulary. As said elsewhere AVG free is an excelent package, download form the AVG site ( google it) Quote
JeffC Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 yes found the avg and all done .. looks the same as the one I paid for last year whats recomended for anti spam for emails, I had spamfighter on my other and was "ok " worst bit was it added itself to every email sent but loads of viagra and penis / breast enlargment emails made there way through ? or do all the free versions do that? any better recomendations then ? ta Quote
slippy Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 penis enlargment emails made there way through Required Quote
langy Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 What PC did you end up with ? Was it 1 of the Dell's ? I'm in a similar position as my laptop is slowly grinding to a halt and i don't mind having a PC. Lots of video editing to be done so a bit more umphhhh is required. Sean Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Second the idea to use a USB memory stick to transfer your dirty piccies etc over. Unless software is free, consider its licence to be like a car tax disc. Would you photocopy one and use it on another car to that which it was originally assigned? The only correct way is to have a licence for each computer that you have it installed on. John Quote
DMMS Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 QUOTE What PC did you end up with ? For some reason I read that as "What penis did you end up with?". I must have a very strange mind.......... Quote
The Great Fandango Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 You need one of these Jeff: Nice Big USB Hard Drive... (And Dirt Cheap Too) That'll take all your music, photos, videos (er, hang on, not sure it'll hold all YOUR videos Jeff) etc. with the benefit that you can take it to your mate's house, work etc. Quote
Pilot Pete Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Heres one for everyone. After sorting Mr C's PC out, all was fine EXCEPT, when you play a video on Media Player, it comes out all psychedelic, different colours. You can make the video out, just all the colour's are wrong. Media Player Version 9. Upgrade to 10? Any thoughts. You couldn't make out any of his porn! Quote
a4gom Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 You need one of these Jeff: Nice Big USB Hard Drive... Is a hard drive in an enclosure rather than in a p.c. going to be just as / more / less stable? Once I have all my stuff named and dated in a sensible fashion I intend to backup to dvd anyway. Quote
peterg Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Yep, upgrade Windows Media Player to version 10, much better fully featured and so far (touch wood) reliable Quote
