Bazzer Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Top speed is all about Power and low drag. So the highest power most streemlined is going to be the fastest. Gearing and enough torque to pull the gear is an issues as well. Of the cars mentioned so far sounds like its got to be between Barry's monster and Tommo's Flymo. The Flymo does not have a screen but Barry has more power. The fact that drag is squared with speed, means Tommo might just have it if he was geared high enough. But then Barry would probably just have to take his screen off Weight makes little difference to top speed, it will just take longer getting to it. Bazzer Quote
barney Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 the flymo also has the westfield aero pack fitted so although useful in the hillclimbing/sprinting that it does very well, there will be an induced drag penalty affecting its top speed. Quote
jeff oakley Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I would have money on Barry's, but it is the drag that kills top speed for Westfields, I had 146mph showing on my private test track, which I guess was a little optomistic but the last say 10 mph was forever coming and the stability was less than perfect (in fact scarey). There will be plenty who can get to 150mph in the right circiumstances but to get to 160-170mph is a whole different world. As an a side, be careful in admitting to any speeds on the road or questionable driving. Over on Pistonheads there was a thread where the Skyline owners web master was being forced to provide details of members who had bragged about warp speed on the road and accidents etc. The implication was that the police were able to use the admissions on the web as evidence in court. Might be a bit difficult to make it stick but just be aware that in these days of terror and other important things we have enough police to read bulliten boards for such admissions. Quote
cng1 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 That puts it at a gearing limited 170mph Doesn't work that simply..........otherwise my old 2 litre Cavalier CDi tin top would have done 195 mph In this case it does. With just 260bhp it was accelerating rapidly when it hit (what was at the time) the rev limiter at 6k, therefore even then it was gearing limited not power limited. The power required is proportional to the square of the speed so the maths says that to do 170 you need 28% more power than 150mph. L16COS currently has about 40% more power than she was running back then so she should still be gearing limited even at 170. Quote
cng1 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 With the available torque, I reckon it would do the 162, I reckon a long road would be needed to hit 173, not sure I'd want to try to be honest. For top speed it is rate of work done, not the force imparted that is critical. In other words power is the appropriate metric here, not torque. Quote
cng1 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 For what it's worth the Prova trackdays over at Sculthorpe airfield are good for Vmax testing as they open up the 2 mile runway over lunch for exactly that purpose. If a bunch of people want to do some testing then I'm sure we can sort out a data logger and do some back to back runs. Hell I might even be tempted to take the screen off and put some bigger tyres on there Quote
domcross Posted April 7, 2007 Author Posted April 7, 2007 Loads of replies... sounds like there are some pretty impressive Westies out there I was thinking allround performance, but primarily, supercar acceleration. Let's face it, we have most fun on public roads between 0 and 70mph So what's this famous 'flymo'? Cheers, Dom. Quote
Terry Everall Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 o to 70 mph is a whole different ball game. Light car and right diff is what you want My car ,Barney's and Nicks old busa are pretty quick off the line and up to 70mph Quote
scooby Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 I can hit 150 effortless, On a private runway I hit 150 with Me and Muttley in the car with no doors on, Bearing in mind my car weighs 752kg plus an extra 35stones with me and Mutts in it plus I have a windscreen which is as aerodynamic as a brick the engine had plenty left with 460ftlb of torque it's pretty quick I remember that Barry........ I was in front of you as i remember :) @ 151 MPH GPS verified Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Yep you where pity that lorry was on the runway as I'd just shifted up to fourth Quote

polly_x Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Got no idea what speed but mine will pull the limiter at 8.2K no problems in 4th down the back straight at Snetterton. Dont really get a chance to get much more in 5th before having to slow down for the next corner. Thats on a T5 box and 3.62 diff and 17 inch 245/40's. Would imagine its over 150. Quote
