congorobot Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 QUOTE It's worth mentioning, but irrelevant to this particular case, that LEDs pull much less current than filament bulbs and sometimes this can mean they won't work in a particular situation. For example, as a warning light for the alternator the LED might light up, but the alternator windings probably won't get enough current flow to 'excite' them. I used maplins 5mm led's with the chrome bezzel for all my dash warning lights. They are all working fine including the alt/volt warning light. Had to add extra resistor to the blue led though as it was destracting at night. Quote

Yes that is possible certainly, that's why I said 'might' give problems because I seem to recall that 'some' alternators do not use the warning light as a source of the exciter current. Yours could well be one of these. There have been cases on here where either the warning light lamp has failed and the alternator stopped charging because of that, and that have found the presence or absence of the lamp is of no consequence. There's no golden rule but it is always worth bearing in mind that the problem could occur. Congorobot, the LED on even an alternator that does need a filament lamp to excite it will work. It's quite happy with the current it draws - it's the effect on the field windings that is the problem. Quote
