cidersurfer Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Choosing words carefully here... As you'll have seen I'm selling off a few items recently to fund those upgrades! I've been offered a company cheque as payment by a brand new member of another forum for an item. The brand new member literally joined that forum minutes after the item was advertised and therfore has no 'track record' on it and no other postings other than in the thread I've put on. Also no details in their profile. I'm not sure if I'm being unduly concerned about the offer of payment by company cheque as I don't know if it's any different from normal. Any advice please? Quote
lukeyboy Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Bank it but don't release gear until is cleared or just tell him that your not been funny but there has been some serious scamming going off recently on several forums and you would prefer cash / paypal etc. to avoid any problems. Quote
Hammy Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Sounds like a scam, smells like a scam - beware a cheque can take a long time to properly clear, longer than when the funds appear in your account. Scams often work because a bank will initially clear a cheque then come back a week or so later and reject it as stolen or whatever - by which time you've handed goods over. I would tell him you need 4weeks for the cheque to completely clear and judge his reaction. Why would he want to use a company cheque ?? look out for poor spelling/English in any notes, get a land line phone number, call it, and get someone to resolve his email ip address to see what country he is really in. The problem is the "great I've sold it feeling" which makes you want to believe the seller is really ok. The other real clue is when they then send too much and ask you to a pay his shipper with the difference - this is a well known scam. Quote

I personally wouldnt worry ;-) dont worry a company cheque is fine - you just need to make sure that it clears ;-) the parts are going onto a 'company rally car' hence the funds from the company oposed to personal cheque. yes i'm a new member on here too :-) normally on pistonheads - do a search for marcevo1 (i'm currently selling a gtm libra as well if it gives you confidence.... Marc ps no offence taken by the way - i'd do the same if uncertain Quote
steve_m Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Scam, company cheques like personal cheques can bounce at any time the issuing bank decides, even years later. Ask him/her to send you cash in a special delivery envelope - you're an established member of this forum and well known, they should be able to trust you - if not you shouldn't have to trust them. marcevo1 Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Scam, company cheques like personal cheques can bounce at any time the issuing bank decides, even years later. please excuse me as i am a new (very new member!) of this forum and the locost forum..... how does normal business work? i issue 10 cheques a day and receive the same amount every day - scam? hhhmmmnnn... this is how a small normal business works i think that there is too much scare mongering at times IMO? biggest scam is the bankers draft IMO - i know loads of people who have taken it as godspell that they are like cash... and then theres the fake cash scam! - i never accept cash payments because of it.. god i'm starting to scare myself :-) Marc Quote

What's irritating is not that you're a scammer but that you think people on this forum will be stupid enough to fall for you ! Quote
Renmure Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 cidersurfer- if you prefer paypal no probs but thought that cheque qould be cheaper for you? Marc I guess that ties up the loose ends there then. Slightly off topic but a thing that slightly bugs me when buying "stuff" on the net / ebay / etc is the 'convension' whereby the buyer is not to be trusted to be sent the goods until he has sent the money and cleared funds are in the Sellers bank account. Yet I am sure that there are more "scams" which involve folk paying for things they never receive than there are ones where folk receive things and dont pay for them. Same thing goes for ebay Feedback.. I tend to buy something and pay instantly by paypal, yet never seem to get my +ve feedback from the seller until I have received the item and given my feedback. Oh well... minor rant over. sorry bout that. Quote

DMMS Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 QUOTE how does normal business work? i issue 10 cheques a day and receive the same amount every day - scam? hhhmmmnnn... this is how a small normal business works Normally businesses operating by sourcing equipment from more standard suppliers. That said, the scamming that has occurred over recent years has made it more and more difficult for small businesses to operate without coming under a ridiculous level of scrutiny. Anyone trying to open a bank account, for instance, will know exactly what I mean! Personally, I would recommend finding out the name of the company and doing a little research before agreeing to anything. Quote
