Mal Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Following on from the current discussion about the status of engineers, have you noticed that there are a higher proportion of engineers who are left handed than in the general population? As a LH engineer myself I have noticed in some engineering meetings I have attended with, say 4 to 7 people around the table, the number of left handers has been 50% even or greater. As far as I know left handers are less than 10% of the general population. What's been your experience? Quote
pete g Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 left handed not engineer but electrical fitter Quote
barney Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 ive met a few with two left hands ,or two right hands iyswim Quote
zoso Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Non sinister here... RH only... although I should've been left handed according to my mother, it's why my writing is crap. At the formula student competition, some cruel sod got the lass on the tannoy to annonce the need, of one of the teams, for a set of left handed screwdrivers... priceless... Quote
Howard Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Yes, I've noticed that. In the design studio I work which comprises industrial designers, engineers and creative visualisers there is an unusually high proportion of left handers. I'm not one of them. Weirder still, of the 15 or so people I have employed in the last 8 years, 7 have been called Mark. With the last one, I was nearly prejudiced against him because of his name. Quote
geelhoed Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 QUOTE ndustrial designers, engineers and creative visualisers The first and last I am not surprised at the lefties, You know how strange they are. Technically I am an engineer a well, (that's the title you get for a MSc in physics) so put one scratch mark at the right hand side! Quote
Hammy Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Guilty as charged, I'm left handed. I'm now really an ex Engineer, but have not noticed any improvement in the use of my right hand - does that disprove the theory ? Quote
Bazzer Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Yep I am a left handed Engineer and have noticed the same !!! Bazzer Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 ******' weirdo's Joiners rule OK Quote
Al Yupright Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Same here. And I agree about getting lots of other lefties round the meeting tables at work. Thought I read something about being left handed causing the left hand side of the brain to develop more and this was the side used for engineering type skills too? Quote
Howard Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 QUOTE Whats one of them then? They're the ones who do the pretty pictures of impossible design concepts that the development designers then have to try and make and put into production They used to use marker pens and be able to draw and it required genuine design flair but its all done on 3D Studio now or even SolidWorks - PhotoWorks which you'll know about. We have about 30 seats of SW. The term 'Creative dept' pisses me off because the development and engineering process is just as creative, but in a different way. Quote
michaelcoombs Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 right handers are in the minority here.... but then it is an art college. Quote
