Kevin Wood Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 QUOTE However, with both wheels jacked off the ground, out of gear and handbrake off I can turn either wheel freely and the other wheel stays still!!! It doesn't turn forward, backwards or move at all .... any ideas (other than throwing it away and starting again!) Sounds like it's either not an LSD or it's past its' best. You need the car in gear for the test I mentioned but if out of gear both wheels should turn in the same direction. Kevin Quote

Kevin Agreed this is an open type, you are simply turning one wheel and the gearbox drive shaft. If you were to put it into gear the opposite wheel would turn the other way. I guess its possible it could be a LSD and its failed but I suspect you just have a standard one. Relatively simple job to change the diff for a LSD one, 2nd hand you should be able to get one and have change from £100. Quote
Robert XR4x4 Posted February 25, 2007 Author Posted February 25, 2007 Ahh, I should have had it in gear! It may well be an open diff, I would be a little surprised as the box had a £1500 rebuild with quaife straight cut gears and the engine had a 7 grand rebuild so I'm surprised they skimped on the diff for the sake of £100! I had a spare kicking round in the shed until I sold it last year! Quote
Kevin Wood Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 If I were spending that sort of dosh I won't think I'd have bothered with a Ford viscous diff either. I'd have gone straight for an ATB. Maybe these don't behave the same way when tested in this manner. Someone on here will know... Kevin Quote
Robert XR4x4 Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 I have been through all the receipts and I may have found a ford receipt for the diff. The invoice says finis code 6146561 N/S DIFF @ £1034+vat in 1996 I am trying to get some ford people to look up the part as I don't have a copy of the ford parts disc anymore! Quote
stu999 Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 According to my guess ascertained from this, I reckon it is an open diff (at least as standard), judging by the mundane models it appears to have been fitted too... Quote
Robert XR4x4 Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 Yep, seems that way. I guess the builder wanted everything brand new. Good for me with respect to the rest of the components on the car, I can find an LSD easily enough 6663906 Diff LSD 2.0l 3.91 MT75 1637548 Cosworth 2.0l 3.64 LSD 1648393 1.8 Diesel 2.0l TC 3.62 LSD 1648395 3.14 LSD 6663905 Cologne V6 2.9 3.36 LSD 2WD 1648394 3.38 LSD 6146561 1.8 OHV/CVH 2.0l efi 3.92 Quote

markboyce Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Not ignoring you.. honest Both days at Seaangle is the plan. Lack of progress on my is annoying at best. I hope to have the cage fitted this weekend and the modified engine mounts welded up which means I can then get on and start the aluminium panneling. Hopefully I'll stay off the beer and make some progress! Quote
VX2L16V Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Get on with it then Boycey *(Don't forget you need to take the step ladder into the garage with you)* Quote
