petrolhead Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 There is a petition to abolish inheritance tax here Quote
Guest Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Better the devil you know - and can plan for. Other countries which have reduced or no inheritance tax collect their funds in other ways - caital gains on the increased value of you house for example Quote
Norman Verona Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I wonder what the annual take on IT is? With all the ways of avoiding it I should think it won't be much. I haven't a problem, spent all my money on a silly little car. Quote

spence Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 All those who have to pay IT should count themselves lucky they've got a house or houses to pay IT on. I'm 36, work bl**** hard and can't afford to buy a small flat. Yet i see all my hard earned taxes being spent on various groups of people being given houses, cars , mobil phones etc etc etc and done f*** all for it. IT MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL. Quote

spence Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Where do i start. Families sprouting out kids to get benefits. How many hard working parents are there with 6 kids and upwards? Single unemployed kids sprouting out a kids to get a house. People who come here, spout off hatred for this country but take, take, take........... Don't see these people living in a cardboard box!!!!!! Example I worked on a building site in Canterbury where the houses and Flats cost over £280,000. They couldn't sell them so they where sold to the local housing group at a knock down price well below market value. They then loaded them with all the latest TOP of the range equipment, cookers, microwaves, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, TV's etc etc etc ( which a hard working buyer never gets). Then filled them with Benefits claimants of all types. When i went to power up the alarms which they ALL also got, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM moaned about this that and the other. UNB****Y BELIEVABLE. Need i go on.......? Quote

Well thats an interesting point you make, and I for one hope you dont find yourself in the position I did this time last year. I lost both my parents to cancer this time last year, and within a month of each other. Neither had suffered long illnesses so they were both unexpected. They had both worked hard all thier lives, and had never claimed a penny in benefits etc. They were'nt wealthy and lived in an average sized semi. They had saved hard for thier retirement and only really started to spend a bit on themselves in the last couple of years. Of course when it came to sorting thier estate out my sister and I were faced with a potentially large IT bill of 40% of thier assets, which incidentally we would have to pay before any of the estate was settled. Fortunatly I employed a very good solicitor who was an expert in these matters, who minimised the damage. I do apprieciate with your struggle to get on the housing ladder, however if you ever lose someone close and find yourself in this position, what do you want to do. Give the government 40% of it so thay can give it to all those people who have done Fu*K all for it. A friend of my dads joked once that on his death his family should send his ashes to the inland revenue with a note saying " here you are....now youve got the lot... Rant over........................sorry Mark Quote
gee_fin Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Inheritance tax is the single thing that infuriates me the most in this entire country. I find it completely and totally despicable. If any party promised to abolish it, I would vote for them regardless of the party (with the exception of the BNP, they can get f*****). Quote
Richgm Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Rant over........................sorry Mark Please don't apologise. Quote
spence Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Sorry to hear that Mark and Sorry for any offence caused. My mum suffers from Leukemia so i know where your coming from. The first bit was only meant as a bit of light hearted banter as expressed with the smiliey at the end. Again sorry for any offence caused. Quote

Lurksalot Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I have heard on the grapevine , that agricultural land is inheritance tax free and that certain parcels of land get sold around for this very purpose . but there ar tax efficient ways to reduce it's impact but with the rocketing house values ,many more people get caught out . mark.anson Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Sorry to hear that Mark and Sorry for any offence caused. No problem Spence, and for what its worth I agree with your comments on the scrounging gits, who after all will not have to sell thier parents houses to pay for thier care in thier old age, like so many others. Like Peteg says Its not till something like this happens to you that you realise how bl**** perverse this country is sometimes. Quote
petrolhead Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 many more people get caught out . Indeed and there are a lot more people now who get caught with IT. £285K is not as much now and with the rise in house prices many are falling into the IT bracket. eg. Like you your parents work hard and if they do well they pay their taxes at a higher rate because they have done well. They may even be employers whose pay other taxes. So they decide, at the advice of the government to invest or save their money, still paying tax on any interest. Now they have a good nest egg knowing fine well that there is a high possibility that when they retire there will be no national pension, then they die suddenly and not had the opportunity to enjoy their saving but being good parent leave the moeny to you in their will. Then the governmant come one last time and fleese you out of 40% over the threshold. So if your parents have amassed £500K you would have to give the government £86000 You think that is right? Quote
